The San Francisco Chronicle called Scarlatti’s La Gloria di Primavera a “feast of vocal invention, supplemented by wondrous instrumental writing for a strikingly large orchestra” after Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and Nicholas McGegan presented acclaimed western hemisphere premiere performances in October 2015. PBO and McGegan are delighted to be the first to record this newly-discovered 300 year old serenata. After Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI acquired the kingdom of Naples in a treaty, the Neapolitans commissioned their court composer, Alessandro Scarlatti, to compose a grand serenata to celebrate the birth of Charles VI’s son, prince John Leopold. Scarlatti wrote the piece within a few weeks and it was performed to audiences in Naples immediately following the birth. Unfortunately, just months after La Gloria di Primavera premiered, the celebrated infant died and the incredible work was forgotten.

Maria Callas s talent as one of the world s greatest singing actresses remains unchallenged to this day and she has acquired legendary status as one of the most iconic figures in the world of classical music. There are very few films of Callas on stage, so it is through the medium of her audio recordings that her art lives on. She recorded exclusively for EMI for most of her career, and these six CDs present a fully representative sampling of her recorded legacy on EMI.

Three serenatas by Vivaldi survive (he is known to have composed at least eight)‚ of which La Senna festeggiante is by far the most enjoyable…One of the work’s most interesting features is Vivaldi’s deliberate use in places of elements of French style‚ for instance in the solemn ‘ouvertur’ which opens Part 2 and the courtly minuet of The Golden Age’s second aria‚ thereby adding to the richness of a work which for the most part is vintage Vivaldi at his most buoyant and irresistible.

Quartet Records presents a new, remastered edition of two Ennio Morricone scores from 1969/1970, written for movies featuring strong female protagonists. Directed by Eriprando Visconti, La monaca di Monza (1969) is widely credited as one of the cornerstones of the nunsploitation subgenre which bloomed in the 1970s. Based on a true story about Sister Virginia de Leyva, the film is about a nun who starts a forbidden romance with an Italian nobleman. Set in the tumultuous 17th century, the film features a brief but passionate Morricone score, highlighted by a tragic romantic theme, a lovely pastoral theme for the couple’s child and Baroque-flavored action cues for the Spanish pursuers. Made a year later, Alberto Bevilacqua’s La califfa (1970) stars Romy Schneider and Ugo Tognazzi in a forbidden romance with a more contemporary setting. Based on the director’s own novel, the story follows the romance of an industrialist and the widow of a worker who used to work in his factory. The 20-page full-color booklet features many illustrations and a detailed discussion of both scores by Gergely Hubai, who also provides trackby- track analyses for these masterful works.

Alessandro Scarlatti was only 24 and had just begun his enormously successful operatic career when he set a libretto by that great Roman patron of the arts, Cardinal Pamphili, on the subject of repentance and divine grace. It was performed before a distinguished audience by a small group of leading singers and instrumentalists of the day in March 1685—the year of the birth of Alessandro's son Domenico (in fact, as a matter of interest, three days before the birth of J. S. Bach). This simple little morality (oratorio is too grandiose a term for it) shows Magdalen torn between youthful pleasures and repentance for hedonistic living: the subject is treated in a sequence of extremely brief arias (and a few duets) and recitatives, which add up to a rather bitty effect, all the more because of seemingly haphazard key-sequences.
