La Maschera di Cera are back with a new album , available both with original Italian or English vocals and lyrics, a trick of the tail done in the past with PFM, Banco and Le Orme (The artwork here is somewhat reminiscent of 'Felona e Sorona', no?) . Their previous release "Petali di Fuoco" was a slight deviation from their usual somber mellotron and bass driven sympho-prog. Wasn't a bad album at all, just different most probably due to PFM guru Franz di Cioccio's clean production and Matteo Nahum's occasional guitar…
Mozart's affectionate quotation from Martín y Soler's Una cosa rara in the Don Giovanni dinner music suggests he admired his Spanish contemporary, whose music was praised by others as 'sweet' and 'graceful'. Such descriptions remain apt for a charming and brilliantly executed performance that's essential for anybody curious about late 18th-century opera beyond Mozart.
La Bocca Della Verita is the next new name from the Italian progressive rock scene. The style of music which can be heard on their compositions can be labelled as retro progressive rock. In every way they look back at the beautiful musical period of progressive rock released in the seventies. All of the bands they covered at first can be heard on this almost 80 minutes long album. But also acts such as Yes and King Crimson could have been an inspiration for the musicians. The two keyboard players easily step into the footsteps of Tony Banks, Rick Wakeman and the late Keith Emerson. Also the bassist knows how to sound like the late Chris Squire. As for the lead guitarist it wasn't easy to compare him with anyone. But he comes close to Steve Hackett and Robert Fripp. Highly recommended to those who adore the progressive rock made in the seventies.
The duo of modern Italian prog notables Fabio Zuffanti (Finisterre, Höstsonaten, La Maschera Di Cera and his own solo works) and Stefano Agnini (La Coscienza Di Zeno) collaborate on the new Italian progressive super-project La Curva Di Lesmo. Inspired by the first story of the surreal, erotic and sci-fi comic books `Valentina' created in 1965 by artist/writer Guido Crepax, the pair wished to combine that shared interest with elements of the most mysterious and esoteric progressive releases, both Italian and worldwide…
Inspired by George Orwell's bleak '1984' novel, "1984: L'Ultimo Uomo d'Europa" ("1984: The Last Man in Europe") explodes with dark symphonic atmospheres and wild energetic outbursts with a welcome dirty production by way of a battery of vintage keyboards, buzzsaw-like guitars and passionate ravishing vocals. Sounding very much like the second coming of Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, Il Balletto di Bronzo and Biglietto per l'Inferno with a dash of Cervello, it makes a huge musical statement in the same way that modern debut albums like 'La Crudelta di Aprile' by the youthful Unreal City and 'In Hoc Signo' by Ingranaggi Della Valle did in recent years, and it's the absolute standout R.P.I/Italian prog release of 2015, perhaps already a true modern classic by those lucky to have discovered it.
Preceded by a solemn prologue in which Iride admonishes mortals that they should not offend the gods, the story of Cavalli’s Didone comes to life thanks to numerous solo passages of highly varied character and structure, designed both for simple basso continuo support and for a more complex instrumental accompaniment, for five real parts which enjoy some independent moments and which create a diversion from the action or blend in with it in a wholly logical way, intensifying it in a studied, evocative manner.
