Following the breakup of the Smiths, Morrissey needed to prove that he was a viable artist without Johnny Marr, and Viva Hate fulfilled that goal with grace. Working with producer Stephen Street and guitarist Vini Reilly (of the Durutti Column), Morrissey doesn't drastically depart from the sound of Strangeways, Here We Come, offering a selection of 12 jangling guitar pop sounds. One major concession is the presence of synthesizers – which is ironic, considering the Smiths' adamant opposition to keyboards – but neither the sound, nor Morrissey's wit, is diluted. And while the music is occasionally pedestrian, Morrissey compensates with a superb batch of lyrics, ranging from his conventional despair ("Little Man, What Now?," "I Don't Mind If You Forget Me") to the savage political tirade of "Margaret on a Guillotine." Nevertheless, the two masterstrokes on the album – the gorgeous "Everyday Is Like Sunday" and the infectious "Suedehead" – were previously singles, and both are on the compilation Bona Drag.

While it isn't a gutsy rock & roll record like Your Arsenal, Vauxhall and I is equally impressive. Filled with carefully constructed guitar pop gems, the album contains some of Morrissey's best material since the Smiths. Out of all of his solo albums, Vauxhall and I sounds the most like his former band, yet the textured, ringing guitar on this record is an extension of his past, not a replication of it. In fact, with songs like "Now My Heart Is Full" and "Hold on to Your Friends," Morrissey sounds more comfortable and peaceful than he ever has. And "The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get," "Speedway," and "Spring-Heeled Jim" prove that he hasn't lost his vicious wit.

THE FIRST EVER SOLO MORRISSEY SHOW Several months before the Smiths dissolved, Morrissey enlisted Stephen Street as his personal producer and new song-writing partner, with whom he could begin his solo career. By September 1987, he had begun work on his first solo album, Viva Hate, recorded with musicians Vini Reilly and Andrew Paresi. Morrissey's first solo performance took place at Wolverhampton's Civic Hall in December 1988. The event attracted huge crowds, with NME observing that "the excitement and atmosphere inside the hall was like nothing we have ever experienced at any public event". Backing Morrissey were ex-Smiths Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke, as well as the one-time Smith, Craig Gannon, filling in as lead guitarist. The set-list featured a mix of Morrissey songs with Smiths tracks from 1987, so none of it had been performed in front of a live audience before. Admission was free to anyone wearing a Smiths or Morrissey t-shirt. Recorded for live radio broadcast but not previously released on CD, this short but dynamic show is now available here for the first time. Including too, Morrissey s final interview while still a member of The Smiths, the final track includes the full conversation the man had with journalist and presenter Muriel Gray in November 1987.

EXTRAORDINARY MORRISSEY BROADCAST FROM HIS MALADJUSTED TOUR After his solo-contract with EMI expired, Morrissey signed to RCA in 1995. On his new label he recorded his next album, Southpaw Grammar, at the Miraval Studios in southern France. It reached number 4 in the UK album charts, but made little impact compared to its two predecessors. In September 1995, Morrissey served as the support act for the European leg of David Bowie's Outside Tour. Backstage at the Aberdeen gig, Morrissey was taken ill and taken to hospital; he did not return for the rest of the tour. Later referring to the tour critically, he stated that when you become involved with Bowie, "you have to worship at the Temple of David". Morrissey returned on Island Records in 1997, releasing the single Alma Matters in July, followed by his next album Maladjusted in August. The album peaked at number 8 in the UK album charts. Its further two singles, Roy's Keen and Satan Rejected My Soul , both peaked outside the top 30 on the UK singles chart. The Maladjusted Tour began in Toronto on 12th September 97, and ended its first leg on 12th October at LA s Greek Theatre, where Moz and his band performed probably the finest show of the tour. Recorded for live broadcast on West Coast Radio, the gig remains previously unreleased but is now finally available on this new CD. Bonus tracks here come from an earlier broadcast made in the KROQ studio on 16th August 97, for the station s Modern Rock Live segment.

Low in High School is Morrissey’s first studio album since 2014 and was recorded at La Fabrique Studios in France and in Rome at Ennio Morricone’s Forum Studios. The record is produced by Joe Chiccarelli (who has worked with Frank Zappa, The Strokes, Beck and The White Stripes to name a few). Morrissey’s talent for combining political statements and beautiful melodies is more prevalent than ever on Low in High-School, capturing the zeitgeist of an ever-changing world. "There are not many artists around today that can compare to Morrissey", offered record label BMG, when the singer inked the deal that brings us his 11th album.

Described by Chicago Reader as “casually clearing the way for one potential path for jazz to progress into the future”, Chris Morrisey is a musician with an uncanny ability to blend styles and genres. Informed as much by alternative music of the 90s like Elliot Smith and Bjork as contemporary Jazz of that era, it was the presence of Happy Apple, the hyper original punk Jazz group from Minnesota (Dave King, Michael Lewis and Erik Fratzke) that installed his sense of what was possible in music.
