"Mon plus beau Noël" has been recorded with the prestigious Prague Symphonic Ensemble and the children's choir of the Maîtrise Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens de Bulle. It features timeless French Christmas melodies – such as “Douce Nuit”, “Les Anges dans nos Campagnes”, and “Mon Beau Sapin” – rearranged and re-orchestrated in exceptional symphonic versions. The composers and arrangers Martin Batchelar, Samuel Pegg, Jérôme Kuhn, and Nathan Stornetta have given these marvellous works new depth and emotion.

Like music lovers the world over, John Nelson believes Johann Sebastian Bach’s Mass in B Minor is a pinnacle of Western music. For years, he has cherished the dream of performing this masterwork in the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris with the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris whose renown has grown constantly since he began conducting with them eight years ago. In addition to John Nelson and his Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, the Mass in B minor brings together the Maîtrise de Notre-Dame choir conducted by Nicole Corti as well as internationally recognized soloists Ruth Ziesak (soprano), Joyce DiDonato (mezzo), Daniel Taylor (alto), Paul Agnew (tenor) and Dietrich Henschel (baritone).

Dieterich Buxtehude composed his Membra Jesu nostri in Lübeck in 1680, and the work, drenched in emotion in a most un-Bachian way, has become increasingly popular in the 21st century. The title might be translated "Limbs of Our Jesus," but actually the Latin texts, of considerable antiquity, describe seven wounds supposedly suffered by Jesus Christ on the cross, and the work thus falls into a group of works in which the number seven takes on mystical significance. Various interpretations have been offered, with the majority adopting the one-voice-per-part technique, sometimes in a severe way, sometimes carrying a feeling of intimate chamber reflection.

A good way of getting to know the legacy of St. Louis is to visit his chapel in Paris, full as it is of stained glass of the 13th century. On a bright day as we experienced two years ago, Saint Chapelle is glorious and one is reminded, as in the Chronicles of the Crusades by de Joinville that he was a truly loved and devout man who has become a saint. His feast day is on 25 August, the very day by chance, we visited the chapel which acts as his shrine. The glass glorifies the Crown of Thorns and the True Cross which St. Louis had purchased — although the chronicles indicate that the King of Constantinople gave them — from the Holy Land and which were placed in a reliquary. On this disc the sequence Regis et Pontificis (tr. 22) celebrates the event.
