A once-in-a-lifetime cast of veterans performs David Berry's play about Libby Strong (Bette Davis) and Sarah Webber (Lillian Gish), widowed sisters vacationing on a Philadelphia island for their 60th consecutive summer. Libby is blind and embittered, while Sarah is healthy, supportive, and almost annoyingly chipper. Their neighbor Tisha (Ann Sothern) tries to convince Sarah to put Libby in the care of her daughter, but Sarah hasn't forgotten Libby's moral support when her own husband died, and she won't entertain such notions – until she is swept off her feet by an aging roué (Vincent Price). When Libby spitefully sabotages this romance, an infuriated Sarah decides that gratitude has its limits. But when it actually comes down to selling their summer house and sending Libby packing, Sarah can't do it.

GarciaLive Volume Nine presents Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders’ August 11th, 1974 performance at Keystone in Berkeley, CA. Joining Garcia & Saunders this evening were John Kahn on bass, Martin Fierro on saxophone & flute and the Grateful Dead’s Bill Kreutzmann on drums. As the site of over 200 performances by Garcia in various configurations, the Keystone Berkeley stage likely felt more like an extension of the Saunders’ family garage where the group would often practice. It was a space without pressure or pretense — one in which they could freely experiment with arrangements, new repertoire and, most of all, just jam.

The legendary Otis Spann gained renown as Muddy Waters’ pianist throughout the latter musician’s classic period of electric Chicago blues. Spann was also influential as a member of the Chess label’s house-band, which backed a roster of blues giants and big selling artists. However, Spann’s importance extended beyond his work as a sideman. He showed off his brilliance as a blues vocalist on a series of splendid recordings in a well-lived (though not extensive) solo career.

Very late on Saturday evening, or rather early Sunday morning, came Sly & The Family Stone at 3:30 am. Led by Sly Stone, they were pioneers of Funk-Rock which was based on Soul and R&B music combined with psychedelic elements as well as Gospel. The band consisted of black and white members, and men and women, which was not usual at that time. Given their late appearance Sly & The Family Stone were remarkably fresh and powerful. The Woodstock show is widely considered one of their best performances.

Johnny’s first two “secular” albums for Mercury (his first release for the label was "Sounds of Christmas") both hit the charts in 1964, with "Tender Is the Night" going all the way up to #12. Both albums feature Johnny’s dreamy takes on stage and film songs, and "Tender…" boasts arrangements by the great Don Costa.

The show was Great! This is my favorite line-up so far for the band- but I always say that. Greg looked and sounded super- singing and playing. He is a classic blues rock musician. Butch, Jaimoe and Marc are the best! Rico sat in for Butch on one tune as well. Way to go Rico… Marc has settled in solid with the band. Tazzz… Oteil had some crazy sounds coming out after his scat solo. Love the thunder of the bass and drums! Derek looks relaxed when he plays with the ABB.
