During his all-too-brief life, the Andalusian composer Manuel Blasco de Nebra (1750-1784) left behind a handful of keyboard works that evoke Scarlatti's concise forms and extraordinary powers of invention. Each of the sonatas consists of two movements: an adagio followed by a fast finale. The adagios are stark and full of gut-wrenching, slowly resolving dissonant moments, while unpredictable twists and turns characterize the almost Haydn-esque Allegros and Prestos, as well as the E minor Pastorela Minuet's discursive melodic trajectory. At times Blasco de Nebra foreshadows future soulmates; you might mistake the Op. 1 C minor sonata finale's persistent dotted rhythms for Schumann's. Javier Perianes understands what makes de Nebra tick, borne out by his varied articulations, wide dynamic spectrum, and shapely embellishments.
This is a wonderful collection of Spanish Baroque harpsichord music. Of course Scarlatti, who came from Italy, is the king. Igor Kipnis plays one of Scarlatti's single sonatas and the great triptych, K. 490- 92. He gives an object lesson in performing Scarlatti with imagination, virtuosity, taste, and ornamented repeats, the latter adding a great deal of interest to the music. José Nebra and Josep Soler aren't quite on Scarlatti's level, but the way Igor Kipnis plays their entertaining music is bound to hold your attention.
Manuel Orlandi Blasco de Nebra figures among the most talented musicians of the 18th century Spain. He studied in Seville and in Madrid. Son and apprentice of José Blasco de Nebra, the organist of the Seville Cathedral since 1735, he composed over 170 works for keyboard instruments, about 30 of which are still in existence. As well as his talent for playing the organ, the fortepiano and the harpsichord, Manuel Blasco de Nebra’s excellent prima vista (or sight-reading: the ability to perform a piece of music upon reading it for the first time) was well-renowned. Heir to Domenico Scarlatti in many respects, Manuel Blasco de Nebra was a creative genius whose life was too short – he died aged 34 – to get the recognition that he deserved; his compositions have since his lifetime been overshadowed by the reputation of Domenico Scarlatti.
This is the second volume of the complete piano works of Manuel Blasco de Nebra (Sevilla 1750-1784). It contains ten out of the twelve sonatas found Montserrat?s Abbey and which are mainly articulated into two movements (Adagio y Allegro). Pedro Piquero maintains in this CD the interpretative quality and clarity he already applied in vol. 1, and this allows us elucidating the risky proposals of the composer as well as enjoying this exquisite music.
