The music of 1920s Berlin was a reaction to the city’s conflicted political atmosphere. A new breed of composer emerged, eschewing the old and embracing a heady mix of cabaret, 12-tone serialism, and New York jazz. With dramatist Bertolt Brecht as their muse, they wrote startlingly original, often beautiful, music with bold, anarchic messages. The rich, seductive voice of Marion Rampal and her incredible group of musicians give vibrant life to the best, from Hanns Eisler’s defiantly anti-Fascist Nein and Kurt Weill’s tribute to Rosa Luxemburg, Ballad of the Drowned Girl, to Hindemith’s riotous demolition of an overture by Wagner, Hitler’s favourite composer.

Not surprisingly, Jean-Pierre Rampal’s recordings for Erato during the 1970s – when he was at the top of his career – encompass an immense repertoire, with a special emphasis on discoveries, whether in baroque, classical or romantic flute literature. Still a model today for flutists and flute lovers all over the world, his incomparable sound, spectacular brilliance and fabulous artistry made many albums legendary. Beyond their sheer beauty, the immense joy of music-making they communicate and the excitement they generate make these performances simply unforgettable.

Harmonia Mundi is an independent record label which specializes in classical music, jazz, and world music (on the World Village label). It was founded in France in 1958 and is now a subsidiary of PIAS Entertainment Group. Its Latin name harmonia mundi translates as "harmony of the world".
