Dutch artist Renzo Martens spent three years traveling throughout the Democratic Republic of the Congo asking the question: "Who owns poverty?" In an epic journey, the film establishes that images of poverty are the Congo’s most lucrative export, generating more revenue than traditional exports like gold, diamonds, or cocoa. However, just as with these traditional exports, those that provide the raw material: the poor being filmed, hardly benefit from it at all.

On "However", Dutch jazz keyboardist Jasper van’t Hof has assembled a trio of American jazz fusion giants including Bob Malach on sax, John Lee on bass and Alphonse Mouzon on drums. The musicians deliver liquid synth lines, rolling rock rhythms and blistering solos on this fusion album that blends elements and influences of funk, blues and country with jazz.

This recording pairs the unique tenor saxophone voice of Archie Shepp with the synthesizer of Van't Hof, a duet in concert. Shepp's more conventional duet recordings (with pianist Horace Parlan, bassist NHOP) have been incredible. But this set fails to achieve the energy and creativity of Shepp's other works except in a few spots.

Van’t Hof’s intense brand of fusion reigns on Epoch, with reed maestro Charlie Mariano on alto sax and Jasper on electric piano as the story tellers.

Over time, jazz pianist Jasper van’t Hof has issued solo recordings furthermore to dealing with ensembles.
