The worlds of the crossover album and of the ECM music label don't overlap much, but this is a crossover album unlike any other released up to this time. For one thing, it deals with the Renaissance lute song, not a form in which new pieces have been written often. And for another, the vocal middle ground between Renaissance vocal styles and the rock background of the contemporary composers is unique. What is here are Renaissance lute songs from England and Spain, plus songs by John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, Tony Banks of Genesis, and, at the end, Sting, expanding on his Dowland album of a decade ago.

For purists, Gavin Bryars has raised issues of appropriation in his contemporary adaptations of fourteenth century Cortonese laude, but it is sometimes difficult to know how much of the material on Oi Me Lasso he has quoted and how much he has elaborated. In their original form, these sacred songs were written for unaccompanied soprano voice; one can be sure that the drones, passing dissonances, and instrumental parts are Bryars' inventions, and that he has reshaped the pure vocal lines to his own expressive needs.

Four CD set. One of the first generation of British rock 'n' roll stars, Marty Wilde celebrates his 80th birthday with this very personal quartet of discs from across a musical career which spans over six decades. During the late 1950s, Marty was one of the biggest UK pop stars, with a string of Top 10 hits for Philips Records, on which he was often backed by The Wildcats. As the '60s dawned, Marty continued to enjoy chart success while evolving his sound away from American rock 'n' roll. In the mid-'60s, he also recorded as folk-pop trio The Wilde Three with wife Joyce (ex-Vernons Girls) and future Moody Blues star Justin Hayward. During the late 1960s, Marty became a hit songwriter for other artists, penning originals for The Casuals ('Jesamine'), Status Quo ('Ice In The Sun') and Lulu ('I'm A Tiger'). While his own career continued apace throughout the 1970s, Marty was also heavily involved with the launch of daughter Kim's career in the early 1980s. In recent years, Marty has fronted one of Britain's most respected rock 'n' roll bands. Marty is a unique celebration of Marty's long and illustrious career. While Discs One and Two are devoted to all of his early A's and B's, Disc Three unveils a hitherto unissued Radio Luxembourg performance from 1959 while Disc Four boasts a whole CD's worth of previously unheard demo recordings handpicked from Marty's own archive. Beautifully presented with remastered sound, detailed sleeve-notes and a booklet awash with images from across the years, Marty perfectly commemorates the musical legacy of one of Britain's most enduring talents who was awarded an MBE for his achievements.

Five time GRAMMY-winner Marty Stuart will release Way Out West, his 18th studio album, on March 10 on Superlatone. The album was conceived as a love letter by one of Country music’s living legends, whom has played with everyone from Cash to Lester Flatt, to the lonely but magical American West, specifically the promised land of California. "If you go and sit by yourself in the middle of the Mojave Desert at sundown and you're still the same person the next morning when the sun comes up, I'd be greatly surprised," says Stuart. "It is that spirit world of the West that enchants me.

Re-imagined, refined, revived are the words that best describe Marty Brown and his new album, 'American Highway', on Plowboy Records. After a two-decade self-imposed "break" from major recording, Marty Brown hit songwriter and producer (I'm From the Country/Tracy Byrd, When I Stop Loving You/Trace Adkins, It Ain't Me If It Ain't You/Brooks & Dunn) returns with a tour de force co-produced with the reverend Jon Tiven (B.B. King, Wilson Pickett, Waylon Jennings) who co-wrote nine of the disc's songs with Brown, and one with the addition of Marty Brown Jr. The result is an embrace of - and homage to- Country's foundational genres. From Gospel to Blues to Traditional Country, Rockabilly and beyond, Brown has pulled these various threads together and created a tightly woven masterpiece.

This CD from V.S.O.P. reissues a fairly obscure Tampa LP featuring pianist Marty Paich (better-known as an arranger), altoist Art Pepper, bassist Buddy Clark and drummer Frank Capp; the music on Marty Paich Quartet, Vol. 9 has also been issued under Pepper's name. Pepper and Paich would have several notable collaborations during the next few years, but this was their first. Pepper is generally the main star (particularly on such numbers as "You and the Night and the Music," "Over the Rainbow" and "All the Things You Are") while Paich (who has several fine piano solos) contributes three of the eight songs to this cool-toned, but hard-swinging set.
