None of these Louisiana funk/soul obscurities (none of which postdate 1975) were on big labels. And almost none of the performers have any name recognition value among general listeners, with the possible exception of "Count" Rockin' Sidney (better known as the zydeco artist of "My Toot Toot" fame) and Katie Webster. That doesn't mean that such material isn't of possible interest, of course. But the questions that arise are: is it good, and does it have a distinct regional identity? Those are hard to answer with authority. This soul-bleeding-into-funk crossover is solid, but nothing to make the Meters sweat, being more derivative of national trends (particularly James Brown) than innovative of their own paths; some passing traces of Stevie Wonder, Bill Withers, Jean Knight (of "Mr. Big Stuff" fame), and other major soulsters of the time can also be whiffed from time to time.

FLAC (tracks), Lossless / MP3 320 kbps | 1:29:24 | 445 / 203 Mb
Genre: Folk Rock, Singer-Songwriter

A folk singer with a poet's spirit, Joni Mitchell is among music history's most poignant and influential songwriters. A veteran of the '60s folk circuit, Mitchell first came to prominence as a songwriter, composing oft-covered tunes of the era "Chelsea Morning," "The Circle Game," and "Both Sides Now." By the time Judy Collins brought the latter into the charts in 1968, Mitchell had released her David Crosby-produced solo debut, Song to a Seagull. Mitchell became part of Los Angeles' folk-rock scene, but worked from a different compositional aesthetic, utilizing alternate guitar tunings and writing from a stark personal perspective. These qualities shone on Clouds, a self-produced 1969 LP that won the Grammy for Best Folk Performance, setting the stage for her 1971 masterpiece Blue, an album that has served as the cornerstone of introspective singer/songwriter music since the '70s.

This music is hard. Not in the sense of machismo or of complexity or of booksmarts or even tunelessness (there's melodies for days), but in the sense that you will come into contact with great pain. It's probably Sarah's, but it might be yours, and as such this disc needs to be handled carefully, as though it glows with some kind of half-life accrued from traumas across a lifetime. Pain, indeed, is one of the ways we can go the deepest, like Fred Nietzsche says: 'Only great pain, that long, slow pain that takes its time and in which we are burned, as it were, over green wood, forces us . to descend into our ultimate depths. I doubt that such pain makes us 'better' - but I know that it makes us deeper.'
