The first time that both musicians performed a piano work for four hands: Schubert's great F minor Fantasy.

With the Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 7, published by Artaria “for harpsichord and piano” in 1797, Beethoven expands the scope of keyboard technique and structural proportions. Indeed, some of the passagework in the outer movements must have been prohibitive to most amateur pianists; and the length of the sonata, at the time, made it the longest work for piano ever published, and the second longest sonata Beethoven composed (the record goes to the Sonata in B-flat Major, Op. 106 “Hammerklavier”). Metric displacements and violent dynamic contrasts inform the opening movement, while the prayer-like Adagio is possibly one of the most extraordinary achievements of Beethoven’s youth. The Allegro that follows, light and playful, is interrupted by a stormy “minore” section that was most likely the inspiration for the first of Schubert’s Klavierstucke, D 946. The melodious but challenging Rondo closes the sonata, unexpectedly, in a murmur.

Celebrating his 60th birthday (5 January 2002) and a 30-year artistic collaboration with Deutsche Grammophon, the Maurizio Pollini Edition presents a wide-ranging series of DG exclusive artist's classic recordings, personally selected and approved by the Maestro himself.

This new recording contains Brahms complete music in which the viola plays a solo part: the two Sonatas Op. 120 and the 2 Gesänge Op. 91, for alto, viola and piano. Brahms two viola sonatas are masterworks of his late style: the perfect handling of the sonata form sets the structure for autumnal reminiscenses and melancholic introspection, alternated by either passionate or tender interludes. Beautiful performances by violist Luca Sanzo and pianist Maurizio Paciariello, who made an excellent recording of Hindemiths Viola Sonatas for Brilliant Classics (BC94782): Strong performance.a real winner (Musicweb). A special treat is the voice of Sara Mingardo in the Zwei Gesänge, one of the foremost altos of today, who sung with Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Chailly, MyungWhunChung, Rinaldo Alessandrini.
