This text aids medical students and trainee doctors in developing their knowledge of the conditions covered and improving their ability to clinically assess patients and formulate a management plan. Once doctors are comfortable in interpreting these graphs, they can use them in consultations with patients about their kidney condition and so support self-management by patients, an increasingly important aspect of healthcare. Kidney diseases and the speciality of nephrology have traditionally been regarded as difficult to understand. This is compounded by the use of complex definitions and terminology. These complex definitions result from a need to categorise kidney diseases according to the way kidney function changes over time, and then to express this in numbers and words. Central to the assessment of patients is the measurement of kidney function.

Foundations of Computational Intelligence Volume 5: Function Approximation and Classification Approximation theory is that area of analysis which is concerned with the ability to approximate functions by simpler and more easily calculated functions. It is an area which, like many other fields of analysis, has its primary roots in the mat- matics. The need for function approximation and classification arises in many branches of applied mathematics, computer science and data mining in particular. This edited volume comprises of 14 chapters, including several overview Ch- ters, which provides an up-to-date and state-of-the art research covering the theory and algorithms of function approximation and classification. Besides research ar- cles and expository papers on theory and algorithms of function approximation and classification, papers on numerical experiments and real world applications were also encouraged.

15 years after the ?rst printing of Algebraic Function Fields and Codes,the mathematics editors of Springer Verlag encouraged me to revise and extend the book. Besides numerous minor corrections and amendments, the second edition di?ers from the ?rst one in two respects. Firstly I have included a series of exercises at the end of each chapter. Some of these exercises are fairly easy and should help the reader to understand the basic concepts, others are more advanced and cover additional material. Secondly a new chapter titled “Asymptotic Bounds for the Number of Rational Places” has been added. This chapter contains a detailed presentation of the asymptotic theory of function ?elds over ?nite ?elds, including the explicit construction of some asymptotically good and optimal towers. Based on these towers, a complete and self-contained proof of the Tsfasman-Vladut-Zink Theorem is given. This theorem is perhaps the most beautiful application of function ?elds to coding theory.

This is a book for clinician educators. It offers modern, evidence-based practices to use in teaching learners at a range of levels, with an emphasis on concrete strategies that teachers can implement in their own clinical practices as well as in small and large group settings.
