Jack Slade ist die letzte Hoffnung der Menschheit. Geboren während einer Sonnenfinsternis im späten 20. Jahrhundert hat er die seltene Gabe, sich in die Zukunft versetzen zu können. Jack hat nur eine Chance: Er muss zurück ins Jahr 1998 und verhindern, dass das Sternentor geöffnet wird, mit dem die Menschheit den ersten Kontakt zu Außerirdischen hergestellt hat. Doch dazu braucht er die Hilfe des "Sternenkindes" Khadija.
