In August 1986 two pairs of young sisters (Claudia and Livia Caffagni, Elisabetta and Ella de Mircovich) founded the ensemble La Reverdie. The name, derived from a poetic genre that celebrates the return of Spring, reveals perhaps the principal trait of a group that, for 30 years now, has captivated audiences and critics alike for the variety in its approach to the vast and varied musical repertoire of Middle Ages and early Renaissance. To mark this anniversary, Arcana brings together in a single 5-CD box-set all the themed projects that, over the years, La Reverdie has devoted to various aspects of Medieval culture.

Tales of Miracles — wonderful and magical stories from the Spanish Middle Ages based on the famous "Cantigas de Santa Maria". A colorful fusion of medieval and contemporary music reveals a distant dream-like world, whoise threatening specters and demons Maria defeats with her miraculous powers. The melting voices with historic, ethnic and electronic instruments imbues the Cantigas with a spirituality that trascends time.

Thirteenth-century troubador Gautier de Coincy's blend of mystical religious poetry and the popular tunes to which he set his poems proves irresistible, especially in the Harp Consort's lively renditions. Given the nature of the material, the sheer variety of rhythms, sounds, and colors on this disc is astounding; the vocal soloists are all excellent, the small chorus adept, captivating when it sings in the gutsy peasant style at appropriate moments. Eight purely instrumental numbers are sprinkled throughout the 20 tracks, each a gem, full of colorful effects from the rich-sounding shawm and other period instruments like bagpipe, vielle, and a variety of percussion instruments that thump and shimmer in ways that make you want to dance.

The first album of the trilogy devoted to Ramon Llull includes a selection of pieces that represents some of the most important genres of the time of Ramon Llull, as well as some of the most representative authors. It offers a musical journey that accompanies the first development stages of Lull’s life, since the moment that begins his radical change to the intellectual illumination, which is attributed to a divine origin-, and that will lead him to Ars. “Conversion, study and contemplation“ illustrates Ramon Llull ‘s youth devoted to sensual pleasures, love and the cultivation of troubadour lyric poetry, from the perspective of a person who left world vanities.
