Meininger Trio Memories

In the face of change, memory becomes precious. This is especially true for Maurice Ravel whose important source of creativity lies in evoking the memories of music from the past. In Ravel’s hand, these memories are delicately suspended between decadence and invention, between nostalgia and progressiveness. Such memories reside in the body, in the form of half-forgotten dances, to be simultaneously recalled and reinvented.

The trio around pianist Jan Alexander is constantly searching for the unknown within a familiar context. The three musicians use original compositions from the field of modern jazz as a starting point and framework for the new exploration of apparent realities. The fact that the pieces also deal with themes such as restlessness, uplifting, searching, and change does not seem to be a coincidence.

Letting the cat out of the bag right away when introducing a new CD might not be ‘stylish’, but the Emil Brandqvist Trio has honestly delivered a masterpiece called “Falling Crystals” (SKP 9135). Over the last few years drummer Emil Brandqvist from Gothenburg, Sweden played his way into the intimate upper ranks of European Jazz; his trio stands for low-key, picturesque, touching melodies and sounds that remain with listeners. Together with pianist Tuomas Turunen from Finland and Max Thornberg from Stockholm on double bass, one of the trademarks for this multinational Scandinavian ensemble has been that the trio eagerly brings in guests to the studio to put the finishing brushstrokes on their audiophonic paintings.
