A contemporary of Lully and Lalande, Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704) was something of an outsider to the French court of Louis XIV, which helps to explain his comparative obscurity. A period of study in Rome doubtless gave Charpentier exposure to the polychoral style long-established from the time of Gabrieli, and this recording presents the triple-choir Salve Regina alongside the opulent Messe à quatre chœurs – written for four separate choirs, with a large continuo team of four organs, four theorbos, bass viol and great bass viol! The possibilities opened up by such a wealth of musicians engender music which seems as close to the proverbial “choir of the angels of heaven” as could be desired.

Francis et Marcel, cambrioleurs à la petite semaine, sont surpris en pleine action par une jeune fille de bonne famille : Lucille. Celle-ci les oblige à accepter une association à trois. Elle leur propose un fric-frac chez sa tante Emma, une riche châtelaine. L'affaire se termine en soirée mondaine. Lucie parle alors d'un gros coup : s'emparer de la recette d'un grand magasin "Bon Marché". Le trio réussit à prendre un gros sac de billet et à fuir avec le butin. Malgré l'intervention de la police, les billets n'étaient que des vignettes publicitaires.

The CDs and DVD, exquisitely encased in a beautiful book – full of facsimiles, photographs and essays as well as vocal texts in innumerable translations – contain performances of some of the most beautifully crafted, deeply spiritual music Charpentier ever wrote. Catherine Cessac, the foremost French authority on Charpentier, writes eloquently on the music and Savall on the impetus for the collection. The repertoire, inspired by the story of the Virgin Mary, is drawn from all periods of Charpentier’s life and reflects the different private and public circumstances of his employment, the musical resources available to him and occasions for which he composed. In several cases more than one performance, each with different personnel, has been included, hence the need for a map.
