The blues scene in Chicago has sadly deteriorated over the last 10 years or so. Most of the old, legendary musicians have died. Only a very few places still feature live music in the black neighbourhoods (the South- and Westside, where Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, and all the other greats had their home base). Many new blues clubs opened on the (white) Northside, but the music there is mostly aimed at the white tourist market. The same old songs played over and over again, no steady bands, personnel in the. bands always changing, definitely never any rehearsal. One of the few bands that have maintained a high musical standard, is The Big Four Blues Band. They were formed more than ten years ago, have not changed the personnel, became better and better over the years, and without trying to become rock stars they are still playing that old Chicago Blues…

With its fourth album "Seven Years" the Big Four quartet, led by saxophonist Julien Soro, celebrates seven years of successful collaboration and mutual musical discovery. These recordings provided a wonderful opportunity to work with the talented trumpeter, Quentin Ghomari. He is not only musical leader of the Papanosh quintet, but also a member of the larger ensemble Ping Machine. In this combined repertoire, with works composed by each of the musicians, the trumpeter introduces his own momentum and brings additional colours to the musical spectrum.

Kent's latest dip into the Motown vaults will thrill all collectors of the company's late 60s/early 70s repertoire, particularly those who love the sounds of Group Soul. The Fantastic Four are revered by Motown fans. Their three-year stay with the label resulted in just a couple of issued 45s but the quartet was scheduled for an album release and recorded enough extra originally-unissued tracks to fill a second album. The Lost Motown Album presents the planned 1970 long player in Motown's plan for its running order augmented with more than a dozen gems from the same period. A whopping 14 of these have never seen the light of day before. All tracks are presented in Motown's original mixes. As ever, the copious illustrations and annotations live up to the quality of the music.

The Natural Four began their quest for stardom in Oakland, CA, in the mid-'60s, landing their first deal with a local outfit called Boola Boola Records. Initially, they had two 1969 releases on Boola Boola – "You Did This for Me" and "Why Should We Stop Now" – that did well in the San Francisco/Oakland area. ABC Records took over distribution and pushed "Why Should We Stop Now" to number 31 R&B in 1969. At this junction the group consisted of lead singer Chris James, Allen Richardson, John January, and Al Bowden.
Three more releases followed on ABC: "The Same Thing in Mind," an old Boola Boola track named "I Thought You Were Mine," and a remake of the Temptations' "Message From a Black Man." Nothing approached even the minimal success of "Why Should We Stop Now," and their relationship with ABC ended on a sour note.
