Unbridled joy springs eternal from 'Halfway Home by Morning'. Recorded live off the floor in Nashville, Tennessee, celebrated songwriter Matt Andersen's tenth album collects all the essential elements for a down-home ramble and shoots them through with enough electrifying energy to drive the rock 'n' roll faithful to simmer, shimmy, and shake.

Telemann wrote funeral compositions for many persons. His setting of the Funeral Music for Emperor Charles VII – transmitted solely in the form of a sketch in the composer’s own hand with numerous corrections and writing simplifications and in part without a text – already points to typical features of his late vocal work: a treatment of the vocal parts that is melodically sometimes austere, mostly coloratura-poor, and systematic in its employment of verbal meter, a melodic design sharpened by succinct rhythms and suspensions, and a harmonic structure enriched by pointedly set interdominants. This funerary music is set in the context of the state compositions ordered by the Hamburg city council for the elections, coronations, weddings, and deaths of Holy Roman Emperors of the German Nation.

Bassist Arild Andersen may not be one of ECM's best-known bandleaders (to Americans, that is), but that hasn't stopped him from amassing an impressive catalog as one of the label's senior statesmen. Andersen himself comments in the liner notes at how fortunate and surprised he was when looking back over his catalog and realizing how many younger players graced his sides. The evidence, however, is that Andersen is too humble: his guidance is like a beacon in bringing the best out of many who would become leaders in their own right. A fine example is on "Vanilje," which opens the album and comes from the Masqualero album. Here Andersen, Jon Balke, and drummer Jon Christensen host two stunning players on the front line, young saxophonist Tore Brunborg and a fresh-faced Nils Petter Molvaer on trumpet.

Michael Lessac's sole long-playing record was produced by John Hammond, and features Paul Motian on the drums, John Castronove on keyboards, Howard Collins on guitar, and Jeff Levine on bass, with Eric Weissberg (guitar) and Tony Glover (harmonica). The sound is elegant, slightly progressive folk, in the manner of Tim Buckley or Eric Andersen, with songs whose titles sometimes play on familiar tracks by other artists, notably Simon & Garfunkel with "My 67th Walk in the Park" and "A Hazy Shade of Red." The singing and playing are pretty enough, and the melodies are attractive and the title is one of the funnier in Columbia's output but Sleep Faster, We Need the Pillow was never memorable enough to attract much attention.

From the first notes of “Weightless” to the slow-dying roar of the crowd as the last licks of “Devil’s Bride” squeal out, Matt Andersen and the Mellotones Live at Olympic Hall is a rollicking, sizzling night of Andersen’s thunderous voice and hot guitar playing mashed up with the ten-piece force of nature that is the Mellotones, all captured at a historic dance hall in downtown Halifax. Andersen calls it “the most drastic thing I could do,” a far cry from his usual one guy, one guitar context.

Carl Nielsen's vivid comedy opera Maskarade has enjoyed a natural status as Denmark's national opera ever since its first performance at the Royal Danish Opera in 1906. On this recording, Nielsen expert Michael Schønwandt leads a sparkling cast of today’s finest Nielsen singers and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra through the delightful yet stirring comedy plot. Recorded in the ideal acoustic of DR Koncerthuset, this is the 21st century’s first studio recording of Nielsen’s much-loved opera, appropriately released to celebrate the Danish composer’s 150th anniversary.

In this wonderfully planned programme the whimsical poetry of York Bowen’s Hans Andersen ‘fragments’—music for a fully-fledged technique, despite the fairy-tale titles—is pleasingly complemented by the bravura of the studies. Nicolas Namoradze proves more than equal to the demands of both.

Released in 1989, "Ghosts Upon the Road" was Eric Andersen's first American album in 12 years. Making his best album since his classic "Blue River". The sound here is friendly, rich and mostly acoustic. Andersen's smoked tenor is as reassuring as ever, and his deft control of melody pleasingly familiar. The Stories here are not all pretty, but they ring true, even if it hurts. "Though a lot of the songs on the album were written in Norway, they're very much about America," Mr. Andersen said. "I can see New York City more clearly when I'm away from it that when I'm there".

Recorded a year after The Sign, Moon Water shows definite signs of growth and increased interplay. Once again spontaneous composition makes up a third of the disc, with Dahl contributing six compositions and Andersen two. There’s an even stronger sense of immediate form emergent in the group improvisations, most notably on “Eouter et Jouer I” which, at over 15 minutes, is the centrepiece of the album. Starting from near silence, with Andersen delivering round, in-the-gut low tones and Heral adding subtle textures, Dahl enters gradually. Anderson and Dahl are especially in synch, both building figures that are sometimes in response to the other’s ideas, at other times moving things forward. Heral slowly introduces a slow 4/4 pulse and the whole piece takes on form little-by-little. Lengthy improvisations such as this can often appear aimless, meandering; but while Dahl, Andersen and Heral are clearly on the lookout, there is an underlying sense of purpose.
