During his long and fruitful career, pianist Michael Jefry Stevens has spanned the range of music from commercial rock and funk to mainstream jazz, and the modern creative improvised style. This recording was in the can for some 13 years before seeing the light of day. It showcases the quartet of Stevens while he was living in New York City, teamed with the mighty bassist Dominic Duval, drummer Jay Rosen, and ex-Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers tenor saxophonist David Schnitter. The music reflects on a certain hard- to post bop esthetic, ballads for old flames, and a solid metropolitan edge that neither boils over, nor secedes to any pressure, expectation or self-doubt. In many ways a robust session due to Schnitter's expressive playing, it also marks this rhythm section as a driving force that can also play tender and restrained, but no less potent jazz.
Michael Landau will be releasing his brand new album 'Liquid Quartet Live' on 21st August via The Players Club, a division of the Mascot Label Group. The album was recorded live at the world-famous Baked Potato Jazz Club in Los Angeles in November last year with his Liquid Quartet line-up of drummer Abe Laboriel Jr (Paul McCartney), bassist Jimmy Johnson (Allan Holdsworth) and on guitar and vocals, David Frazee (Burning Water).
Minimalist Blues instrumentals. Billy, Paul, Chuck and Rosy got together in the early 1980s as the 11th Hour Band ' played some great rockin' blues, hit the Boston area clubs and had some wild times. They released 'Hot Time In The City Tonight' in 1985, the first record on the fledgling Tone-Cool Records imprint, and went on to play together off and on for the next few decades. They all stayed busy with other pursuits, musical and otherwise, but their unique musical chemistry and friendship kept bringing the '11 Guys' back to their original quartet.
