Go (1976) is a concept album in the truest sense of the term, fusing pop/rock with tinges of jazz and elements of classical all connected by a central motif of space travel. More specifically, according to Robin Denselow's liner essay, the theme deals with "change and polarity-fantasy and reality, death and re-birth, things changing to their opposites." Stomu Yamashta, Steve Winwood and Michael Shrieve lead an impressive ensemble through soundscapes, unveiled in a variety of perspectives. Perhaps it is the international cast of performers that allows for such an unfettered consortium of ideas that brought together former Spencer Davis Group, Traffic and Blind Faith member Steve Winwood, as well as Santana co-founder Michael Shrieve and mid-'70s era Santana percussionist Yamashta – the latter of whom were key benefactors to the criminally underrated Santana long-player Borboletta (1974).

This CD is somewhat difficult to categorize. I'd call it a jazz disc, but jazz purists might dismiss it as "New Age." The playing is hardly Kenny G drivel, but Mark Isham's Miles-Davis-esque moody solos do give it a rather cinematic quality. If you don't mind the slightly pretensious quality of this performance, I think you'd realy like it. I personally LOVE "Moon Over You," which nicely combines Andy Summers' spooky guitar work with a nice latin undercurrent. Michael Shrieve does a great job on this, and unlike some releases by drummers, he doesn't dominate the proceedings. There are no extended drum solos; no wild drum-based pieces meant to show off his chops. He's a powerful player, but this is a true ensemble effort that really shows off Mark Isham more than anyone else.

Progressing with guitarist Carlos Santana from his early Afro-Cuban rock and pop-based successes to his experimentation with jazz fusion, drummer Michael Shrieve subsequently released a string of fine solo recordings of his own. This one features guitar hero Bill Frisell and the ever-inventive organist Wayne Horvitz for a rather divergent set featuring ethereal soundscapes, loose grooves, and crunching opuses. Here, Shrieve provides sturdy backbeats to coincide with some nicely placed fills and his acute implementations of the dynamic. This effort highlights Frisell's wily and rather slithery guitar work, enhanced by the glowing sonic characteristics of the production, when viewed upon as a whole.

"The Big Picture" is a collaborative album by Michael Shrieve and David Beal, released in 1988 through Fortuna Records. This collaboration between Shrieve and the talented young drummer David Beal is an electronic percussion tour-de-force with epic rhythms, powerful melodies, and broad textural brushstrokes. Amazingly enough, this innovative album fell through the cracks when it was first released and didn't get nearly the attention or distribution it deserved.
