Look back over the classical releases of the past few years and you’ll see a trend emerging. Sitting somewhere at the junction of folk music, early music, bluegrass, jazz and even pop, it includes albums like Andreas Scholl’s ‘Wayfaring Stranger’ (Decca, 1/02), Apollo’s Fire’s ‘Come to the River’ (Avie), Anonymous 4’s wonderful ‘1865’ (Harmonia Mundi, 2/15), most of L’Arpeggiata and even Concerto Caledonia’s ‘Purcell’s Revenge’ (Delphian – see below).

Sonny Boy Williamson was an enigma in the modern blues world of the early 1960s, a real true example of the travelling blues man who rambled and hoboed across America playing music, gambling, womanising and drinking heavily along the way. 26 tracks including all 12 titles from the classic 'Down And Out Blues' albums which reach No. 20 in the UK charts. Herein are gems such as "One Way Out", "Fattening Frogs For Snakes" and as the title of this collection suggests the hit "Don't Start Me Talkin'" which has been covered by The Doobie Brothers, Gary Moore, Rory Gallagher and even the New York Dolls. Session musicians include Muddy Waters, Otis Spann, Jimmy Rogers, Willie Dixon and more.

Luys i Luso – “Light from Light” – is Tigran Hamasyan’s first ECM album, a spellbinding exploration of Armenian sacred music, featuring the prodigiously gifted pianist with the Yerevan State Chamber Choir. Repertoire includes Armenian hymns, sharakans and cantos from the 5th to the 20th century, all newly arranged for voices and improvising pianist by Hamasyan himself. The album was recorded in Yerevan last October, and produced by Manfred Eicher.

Constantly tapping into the singular northern landscapes of his native Norway for inspiration, Hærleif Langås transposes his views and feelings of the great white north into intricately deep and poignant soundscapes. Northaunt's sound can best be described as landscapes transformed into aural emanations, enabling the listener to in turn be able to journey through those barren and foreign lands through the minds eye.
