Despite its arcane Latin title, Supraphon's four-CD set Musica Antiqua Citolibensis delivers on a part of the literature that coheres: the music created by local kapellmeisters in the Czech city of Citoliby. Although located outside of the loop of Bohemia's main cultural centers such as Prague and Brno, Citoliby enjoyed a period of primacy in music in the late eighteenth century owing to the refined tastes of its rulers, the Pachtas; the city's coat of arms bears the image of an organ. There is a Citoliby School of composers whose work is comparable to those of the contemporary Mannheim School, though quite different in style.

The mezzo-soprano Dagmar Pecková is giving a very personal gift in the form of this Christmas album. The listener is treated to Bohemian and Moravian carols and to the tender poetry of Christmas songs from seventeenth-century Bohemian Baroque hymnals (Michna's Chtíc, aby spat is included in the collection, naturally). Dagmar Pecková has, of course, also turned her gaze beyond the hills on her homeland's borders. Ultimately, whether it is carp or turkey on the festive dinner table, it is the birth of the Saviour that is celebrated all over Europe. Good King Wenceslas is sung in England and Lulajże Jezuniu in Poland, while Stille Nacht and Adeste fideles are sung in many places in a variety of translations. But what about in Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, or Italy? The musical treasures of those countries are found here as well.

The highly acclaimed Christmas CD Nativitas is now joined by a new festive album, bearing the title Exaltatio. While in Colloquial Latin the word means “exaltation” and “elation”, in Christian theology it has a more profound connotation: “elevation”. The mezzo-soprano Dagmar Pecková has recorded yet another Christmas-themed album, featuring Czech and other European carols and folk songs hailing the Nativity. At Christmas, people feel much closer to one another than at any other time of the year, and it has been so for centuries. The special seasonal atmosphere is what French, German, English and Polish songs have in common. Pecková has again reached for Baroque hymnbooks, in which piety combines with a majestic sublime mood. The album also encompasses much more high-spirited and poetic folk carols. Jaroslav Krcek has made stylistic arrangements, whose singular signature relates to Musica Bohemica. The CD features several Baroque-inspired pieces he himself has composed. The magic of Christmas evidently continues to be celebrated by contemporary creators.

Produced by Jean-Baptiste Mersiol and Jacques Viret, Emeritus Professor of Musicology at the University of Strasbourg and a Gregorian chant specialist, this 3-album set highlights historic recordings dating from 1930, restored to a sound quality that is almost contemporary and gathered together for the first time in their entirety, and with their original running order. Solesmes Abbey was then the world’s great specialist in Gregorian palaeography, and its chants aroused an admiration that was unanimous and went beyond musicological considerations. A genuine cornerstone of Western music, the universal splendor of this monodic singing with a thousand-year history is invaluable evidence that grace is obtained through beauty.

The famous British Library in London owes one of it's musical treasures to an English tennis player: A manuscript - probably written on the continent - with violin music around 1680 from faraway Vienna. Virtuoso sonatas by and from the circle of the devil's violinist Johann Heinrich Schmelzer. Veronika Skuplik, "prima donna" in the baroque violin firmament, has worked out some of these musical stories with virtuosity and incomparable sensitivity. Without going with the zeitgeisty fashion of lush continuo, she is accompanied by Jorg Jacobi on the historic organ of the Laurentiuskirche in Langwarden.

With this ninth and final release in their Josquin Mass cycle, Peter Phillips and The Tallis Scholars come to three of his greatest works. Although all three Masses come roughly from his early middle age, together they form a perfect showcase for a genius who felt challenged to make each setting different. - The Tallis Scholars' Josquin Mass cycle may have spanned the longest period of any project in the history of recorded music, with over 33 years having elapsed between the first album in the series which won the Gramophone Record of the Year Award in 1987 and this final instalment. Composer: Despres, Josquin (c.1440-1521)
