UK three CD set. While the likes of Rubber Soul, 'See My Friends' and 'Still I'm Sad' had served notice in 1965 of British pop's heightened level of ambition, 1966 would prove to be an even more tumultuous twelve-month period as experimentation and innovation grew to new levels. The release that August of Revolver brought the concept of psychedelic music out of the margins and into the mainstream. However, psychedelia had been percolating throughout the year. The word was already in subterranean use in America, adapted by the likes of The 13th Floor Elevators and Hollywood hustler Kim Fowley, who in late 1965 had become the first person to promote a record with the term "psychedelic". Featuring 84 tracks, A Slight Disturbance In My Mind: The British Proto-Psychedelic Sounds Of 1966 examines the experimental pop element of the British music scene during that epochal twelve-month period with a dizzying, dazzling mix of nascent psychedelia, introspective pop and what's been retrospectively labelled freakbeat. We feature vital contributions from some of the era's biggest names (The Kinks, The Yardbirds, The Hollies, The Animals etc), a bunch of highly collectable cult classics, a huge stash of unissued-at-the-time nuggets and early outings for such future legends as Bowie, Bolan, Slade and The Bee Gees. Housed in a clamshell box containing a 52-page booklet crammed with biographical information and priceless period photos and memorabilia, A Slight Disturbance In My Mind is a glorious snapshot of British pop storming the gates of a new, strange and wonderful dawn.

Model-turned-actress Peggy Lipton was (and is) one of the great beauties of her generation, and in her role as flower child Julie Barnes on The Mod Squad, became the It Girl during the show s late- 60s/early- 70s run. The same year (1968) that she premiered on the show, Peggy also unveiled her formidable singing talent on a self-titled album produced by Lou Adler and released on his Ode record label. The album yielded a charting single in Stoney End and led to some other Bubbling Under non-album single releases for Ode including evocative covers of Laura Nyro s Lu and Donovan s Wear Your Love Like Heaven plus a collaboration with writer-producer Jimmy Webb on his song Red Clay County Line all of which we ve collected on Peggy Lipton: The Complete Ode Recordings, which features everything she released on the label plus four unreleased tracks including a version of Brian Wilson s I Just Wasn t Made for These Times and a rendition of Carole King s Now That Everything s Been Said that she performed on The Mod Squad! Our Real Gone reissue of this lost gem (which has only come out on CD in Japan as a straight album reissue without the bonus tracks) replicates the original album s gatefold art with wallet packaging that includes a booklet displaying rare photos and single picture sleeves, with notes by Joe Marchese featuring quotes from Peggy Lipton. An earful and an eye-ful from the multitalented Ms. Lipton!

At 68, Maynard Ferguson's thrill-filled hornucopia is still spilling over with joyous power. His stratospheric sound hasn't decreased one decibel, and he still plugs in those incredibly rich, round notes where they count most. His current mod squad swings hard and tight throughout, especially on "Caravan." The band's working over of "Sugar" has an intensity beyond Stanley Turrentine's original. The leader's East Indian affinity is evident on "Sweet Baba Suite;" the traditional raga base is punctuated by straightahead solos, Chip McNeill's tenor in particular. Matt Wallace turns in fine tenor and alto work throughout, while trombonist Tom Garling has several fine segments. Pianist Ron Oswanski oozes romance on "I'll Be Around" and drummer Jason Harnell boots the boys through a soul-swinging blues, "It's the Gospel Truth."
