One of the first Modern Jazz Quartet albums on Atlantic - a 1957 set that finds the crew in one of their freshest periods - laying down their soon-to-be trademark style in a fashion that warrants the self-titled tag! The set kicks off with a stellar medley of standards, all given the tight MJQ touch! The crew strolls through "They Say It's Wonderful", "How Deep Is The Ocean", "Body And Soul" and more in that 10 minute stretch. Other album highlights include the drum-heavy "La Ronde", a sweet reading of "Night In Tunisia", "Baden Baden", "Bag's Groove" and "Yesterdays".

A wonderful collector's edition of jazz pianists' records in almost all styles from the first ragtimes to modern jazz.
The Kamikaze Ground Crew is often referred to as 'six horns and a drummer.' The wide-ranging influences that the players bring to the group include jazz, European circus and street music, world folk, brass band, chamber music, and rock-and-roll. Among them, the members of Kamikaze Ground Crew play nearly forty instruments, and in their collective careers they have played with such musicians as Don Cherry, Brian Eno, Jon Hassell, Urban Verbs, Joseph Jarman, Carla Bley, Bill Frisell, Wayne Horvitz, and others.
A genre defying collection of tunes for 6 horns and drums, with the occasional electric guitar, accordion and vocal, creating a unique cinematic sonic vision, with covers of Sly Stone and Robert Johnson and a Shakespear song.

Originally the pit band for the comedy troupe the Flying Karamazov Brothers, the Kamikaze Ground Crew defies being pigeonholed into any one genre of jazz. Great horn and reed playing is accented by the occasional addition of toy piano, accordion, and the rarely heard slide trumpet. Among the most intriguing tracks are the loping "Cowboy," the Middle-Eastern-flavored "Some Wild Water," and the campy "Poppa Dance," which must be a treat to see on stage. Worth checking out by those with wide-ranging tastes.
