Together for the first time in the recording studio, sisters Mari and Momo Kodama are scintillating on these lively arrangements from Tchaikovsky’s ballets "Swan Lake", "Sleeping Beauty" and "Nutcracker". In another first, the release contains the first ever recording of Arensky’s transcription of the timeless Nutcracker together with notable arrangements by Debussy and Rachmaninov. Conceived on a grand scale, Tchaikovsky’s colourful, often passionate scores abound with graceful melodies, arresting harmonies and exuberant orchestration. Composers such as Arensky, Debussy and Rachmaninov made arrangements of these works for piano, not mere reductions but wholesale realizations of the works, combining subtlety and insight with their own technical polish.

Momo è una ragazzina di undici anni timida e piena di fantasia che sta soffrendo a causa della recente morte del padre ed i conseguenti profondi cambiamenti nella sua vita. Con sua madre si trasferisce da Tokyo a Shio, una remota isola dove un tempo viveva la madre quando era bambina, ma Momo non si adatta bene al nuovo ambiente, abituata com'è …

Tra le rovine di un anfiteatro, ai margini di una grande città, trova rifugio una strana bambina, che, fuggita dall'orfanotrofio non conosce nemmeno la propria età. Agli abitanti dei dintorni, che la guardano incuriositi, dice di chiamarsi Momo. Non passa molto tempo che la bambina si conquista la fiducia e la simpatia di tutti, chiunque abbia un problema va da Momo che non dà consigli e non esprime opinioni, si limita ad ascoltare con un'intensità tale che l'interlocutore trova da solo la risposta ai suoi quesiti. Un giorno gli agenti di una sedicente Cassa di Risparmio del Tempo si presentano anche nel microcosmo costituito da Momo e dai suoi amici. Tutti cadono nella trappola dei "Signori Grigi", e Momo deve affrontare da sola la situazione…

Mari Kodama is a Japanese pianist, sister to pianist and duo partner Momo Kodama, and spouse of conductor Kent Nagano. She was born in Osaka, and due to her father's travels, she was raised in Germany, France, Switzerland, and England. At age 14, she entered the Paris Conservatory, studying piano with Germain Mounier and chamber music with Geneviève Joy-Dutilleux. In 1984, she gave her debut performance in Japan, followed quickly by performances in Europe and the United States. She has played at various music festivals, such as the Mostly Mozart Festival, the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival, Music Days at Forest Hill, and other international festivals in Lyon, Montpelier, Salzburg, Aix-en-Provence, Aldeburgh, San Francisco, Sapporo, and Gmunden. She has performed Beethoven's complete Piano Sonatas in a series of recitals in Los Angeles and Pasadena, and recorded them for PentaTone Classics.
