Catherine, a concert pianist, is surprised one night by the arrival of her best friend from childhood, Marie-Alexandrine (Max), whom she hasn't seen for 25 years. Catherine and Max were Québec's most promising young pianists in the mid-1960's when the adventurous Max gets pregnant. She wants to keep the child, but her mother forces her to give him up for adoption; afterwards, Max leaves Québec and music. Now, years later, she returns, obsessed with finding her son. She locates the adoption records, and social services contacts her son to ask if he wants to see her. He refuses, but she keeps trying. Is a relationship with him possible? And what about her musical talent?

Thanks to falsified dental records supplied by his former neighbor Nicholas "Oz" Oseransky (Matthew Perry), retired hitman Jimmy "The Tulip" Tudeski (Bruce Willis) now spends his days compulsively cleaning his house and perfecting his culinary skills with his wife, Jill (Amanda Peet), a purported assassin who has yet to pull off a clean hit. Suddenly, an uninvited and unwelcome connection to their past unexpectedly shows up on Jimmy and Jill's doorstep: it's Oz, and he's begging them to help him rescue his wife Cynthia (Natasha Henstridge) from the Hungarian mob. To complicate matters even further, the men who are out to get Oz are led by Lazlo Gogolak (Kevin Pollak), a father figure of Jimmy's. Oz, Jimmy and Jill will have to go the whole nine yards—and then some—to manage the mounting Mafioso mayhem.

Grâce à son ex-voisin, Nicholas " Oz " Oseransky, qui lui a fourni un dossier dentaire bidouillé, Jimmy " La Tulipe " Tudeski, tueur à gages rangé des voitures, passe désormais ses journées à jouer les fées du logis et les parfaits cordons bleus en compagnie de son épouse Jill, qui se figure être une meurtrière professionnelle sans avoir jamais fait mouche. Et voilà qu'une vieille connaissance ressurgit inopportunément sur leur pas de porte : il s'agit de Oz, qui les supplie de l'aider à arracher sa femme Cynthia à des gangsters hongrois. Ensemble, il leur faudra surmonter mille obstacles afin de défaire ces malfaisants mafieux.
