The aria Szumią jodły na gór szczycie is considered one of the most beautiful of the 19th century.

Moniuszko is always bracketed with Smetana and Erkel, as the originator of a national style for Polish opera as they were for opera in Czech and Hungarian lands (the Glinka comparison, for Russia, has less validity). Halka, his most successful opera, makes a very occasional appearance in Western theatres: though it was written in the 1840s, it did not reach the Polish stage until 1854, and its British premiere came in 1961. Moniuszko's other operas are almost never to be found outside Poland. The overtures here selected do not include that to his other most successful opera, The haunted manor, which only has an Intrada, and, as can be seen above, choice differs only in CPO's inclusion of Jawnuta and Olympia's of two shorter pieces.

‘We already know that he was an outstanding composer, the only musician who, while working in a country during the hardest period for the nation, in such adverse conditions, with the strength of his talent and character, stubbornness and perseverance, gained a position of exceptional importance,’ Witold Rudzinski writes in his book about Stanislaw Moniuszko. Due to historical and political circumstances, the artistic achievements of this Polish composer are a special part of the Polish national idiom. His operas (Flis, Halka, The Countess, Paria, The Haunted Manor, Verbum nobile) and songs became an excellent carrier of patriotic content. The latter, in terms of quantity, constitutes the vast majority – Moniuszko wrote approximately 300 songs.

Stanisław Moniuszko was Poland’s leading nineteenth-century opera composer, and has been called the man who bridges the gap between Chopin and Szymanowski. In addition to operatic works he also composed purely orchestral music, and this recording reveals that his essentially lyric style could function perfectly in the non-vocal medium. There is thematically memorable music from the comic opera Hrabina (The Countess), as well as enduring Polish-flavoured dance scenes from his most popular and famous stage work, Halka. The spirited Mazurka from Straszny Dwór (The Haunted Manor), Moniuszko’s crowning operatic achievement, draws freely and inventively from his national heritage.

Halka

Halka (1929)
The beautiful highlander Halka falls in love with the rich nobleman Janusz and rejects the adoring highlander Jontek. However, he soon finds out that the lord's love promises cannot be trusted. This is the plot of one of the most famous Polish operas in a nutshell. Konstanty Meglicki's Halka is one of three Polish pre-war adaptations of Stanisław Moniuszko's work.
