In the face of change, memory becomes precious. This is especially true for Maurice Ravel whose important source of creativity lies in evoking the memories of music from the past. In Ravel’s hand, these memories are delicately suspended between decadence and invention, between nostalgia and progressiveness. Such memories reside in the body, in the form of half-forgotten dances, to be simultaneously recalled and reinvented.

Dedicated to spreading awareness of Carnatic (South Indian classical) music throughout the West, Jyotsna Srikanth interprets compositions from revered 15th- and 18th-century Carnatic composers. The Berlin Philharmonic never has had much opportunity to play Ravel, which is a pity because under Pierre Boulez they do it extremely well. Under their current music director, Claudio Abbado, the orchestra more often than not sounds positively comatose.

The emotive young American tenor Eric Ferring delivers a moving and ambitious collection of art songs with a chamber music emphasis. In this follow-up release to his acclaimed debut album No Choice but Love (Lexicon Classics), Ferring is joined to great effect by pianist Madeline Slettedahl and the French ensemble Quatuor Agate.

Landscapes it is a look at the soundscapes that make up Pau Codina's universe (Pau Codina profile), a musician of the now and here, indebted to the great referents of his genre (with Bach as the main inspiration and the interpretation of a Cassadó Suite that continues to be iconic for cellists) but clearly close to the authors and current music as evidenced by the inclusion of a work by composer Joan Magrané, first recorded on a disc, as well as the Sonata composed in 1955 by the recently deceased George Crumb.

Madrugada has been Norway’s biggest band in over a decade, and the reunion three years ago, eleven years after they left, was extremely successful.
