A superb group featuring pianist Dwike Mitchell and bassist/French horn player Willie Ruff, the Mitchell-Ruff Duo has been recorded erratically and rarely reissued on CDs. This 1959 Town Hall concert is a recreation of an earlier performance in Moscow that could not be recorded due to problems with the Soviet regime. (Ruff taught himself Russian in order to better communicate with musicians and the audience during their stay in the Soviet Union, which is described in detail within Ruff's excellent autobiography, A Call to Assembly.) The piano/bass duets include a subtle arrangement of "Walking," an unusual take of "When Lights Are Low" that utilizes a recurring clock-like vamp, a playful "Squeeze Me," and a driving version of Clifford Brown's exciting bop anthem "Daahoud."

Here are four works for trumpet and orchestra all from the pre-Perestroika USSR.
The Arutyunian is a singularly attractive work dating from 1950. It is brilliant (as you would expect), languorously suggestive of warm summer nights in the Caucasus and, in places, a hair's breadth from Gershwin's blues. Those of you who may have heard the violin concerto this is a much more attractive work given a strapping performance and vivid recording. The big theme struts like a toreador.

Firma Melodiya continues the series of compact discs dedicated to December Evenings Festival that takes place at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. This album, like the previous one, is dedicated to the 1985 festival World of Romanticism and includes recordings featuring Sviatoslav Richter. The atmosphere of December Evenings, an event initiated by the great pianist, differed from usual philharmonic concerts. The spirit of music as an inseparable part of "fusion of arts" the romanticists dreamt of was invisibly felt in each number; a sensitive listener can catch it in these, perhaps technically imperfect, concert recordings from thirty years ago. The works by Schubert, Schumann and Chopin were performed by Sviatoslav Richter in ensemble with his outstanding contemporaries, violinist and David Oistrakh's student Oleg Kogan who passed away prematurely, violist Yuri Bashmet, cellist Natalia Gutman and clarinettist Anatoly Kamyshov.

The Austrian Salonists with violinist Peter Gillmayr are widely popular with both audiences and critics alike for their extraordinary, cross-genre programs. This new recording by the title «Russian Dances» features works by composers like Alexej Kozlov or Anatoli Novikov, traditional Russian melodies like «Dark Eyes» or «Moscow Nights» and evergreens like the «Waltz No. 2» from the Suite for Varieté-Orchestra by Dmitri Shostakovitch. Further dances are taken from popular ballets like «The Nutcracker» by Pjotr Iljitsch Tchaikovsky («Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy») or from «Romeo and Juliet» by Sergej Prokofiev. It my surprise some listeners that there also exist tangos from Russian descent, but the virtuoso Russian bajan player Efim Jourist composed numerous works that pay homage to this dateless Argentine dance.
