Recordings that include strings quartets by Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern are common, but an album that includes music for quartet and voice by each of them is a rarity. Schoenberg's Second String Quartet, with a part for soprano in its third and fourth movements, is standard repertoire, but the version of Berg's Lyric Suite with a vocal part in the final movement is highly unusual, and Webern's bagatelle with voice, an unpublished movement apparently once intended to be part of the Six Bagatelles, Op. 9, receives what is probably its first recording. Novelty aside, the high standards of these performances make this a formidable release. Founded just before the turn of the millennium, Quatuor Diotima plays with the assurance and mutual understanding of a seasoned ensemble. The quartet has a lean, clean sound and the ensemble is immaculate, playing with exquisite expressiveness, an ideal combination for this repertoire.

The enduring charm of Schubert's Impromptus lies in their status as his most beloved creations, and for good reason: they are, in essence, songs without words infused with melodies of rare beauty. Composed in 1827, just one year before the composer's passing, the first book, D. 899, speaks to the listener in a profoundly intimate and personal manner. The German Dances, D. 790, were Brahms' favorite set of Ländler, representing the folk pieces so typical of Schubert's genius. The Sonata No. 10 in C major, D. 613, reveals a composer exploring the limits of modulations and chromaticism, yet always prioritizing melodies."

As if he had become one with Wilhelm Müller’s hero, Schubert explores solitude, emotional turmoil, the lure of new horizons, disappointed or impossible love – and death too. In this first instalment of the Schubert series that Samuel Hasselhorn and Ammiel Bushakevitz will be offering us every year at 200-year intervals from the composition of the songs in their programme, they give a poetic and poignant reading of this founding masterpiece of the lied.

Schubert was known in his time primarily as a composer of songs, but he was also a master of the dance form and wrote prolifically for a middle-class society eager for domestic entertainment. He loved ländler (triple-time country dances), the "Écossaises" (supposedly Scottish), and the rich variety of genial German dances. Viennese pianos of the day produced a sound that was clear and transparent, very different from modern instruments, and in this recording Yang Liu plays on a Steinway grand and a copy of a mid-1820s fortepiano by Conrad Graf, a maker well known to Schubert.
