Big Band, Swing, Bop | Country: USA | Label: Ember Records - EMBCD 3338

This Ember collection includes Billy Eckstine and His Orchestra's 1944 recordings for Deluxe Records. Eckstine's band featured some of the best sidemen of the big band era – Dizzie Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Sarah Vaughan, Art Blakey, Gene Ammons, Maxine Sullivan, Benny Carter, Oscar Pettiford – and they swung harder than anyone else on numbers like "Good Jelly Blues," "Blowing the Blues Away," and "I Got a Date with Rhythm." Unfortunately, the sound quality hasn't been remastered at all since this same sequence was first reissued (in 1962), and all of this material is also available on the superb 1944-1945 collection.

Frank Wellington Wess (January 4, 1922 – October 30, 2013) was an American jazz saxophonist and flautist. In addition to his extensive solo work, Wess is remembered for his time in Count Basie's band from the early 1950s into the '60s. Critic Scott Yannow described him as one of the premier proteges of Lester Young, and a leading jazz flautist of his era – using the later instrument to bring new colors to Basie's music.

This solo recording from the Canadian pianist is dedicated to his many classical and jazz influences in quite the manner of his mentor, the late Don Pullen. But Jackson is emerging as an original expressionist in his own right, exploring dense harmonies, arpeggiated embellishments, and a fortuitous style of improvising that is nothing less than startling. Of the 12 tracks, the more powerful ones – "Camiliano," "I Mean You," "Round & Round," and "Poco-Loco-Moco," all sport quite different signatures. The first, dedicated to Michel Camilo, has Jackson literally hurtling at the piano, throwing himself into the flying double-time lines.

Born in Philadelphia on 11th December 1938, as a youth McCoy Tyner was encouraged to study piano by his mother and began lessons at age 13. Within two years music had become the focal point in his life and Tyner was playing on his neighbor's instrument, but his family soon invested in one of his own for the budding musician, following which he began hosting jam sessions at home. Among his friends were a number of other young musicians who would go on to make their mark in the field of jazz, including Lee Morgan, Archie Shepp, Bobby Timmons, Reggie Workman, and most notably, fellow pianist Bud Powell and his brother Richie. McCoy later said, Bud and Richie Powell moved into my neighborhood. Bud was a major influence on me during my early teens. He was very dynamic. Tyner later attended the West Philadelphia Music School and the Granoff School Of Music.
