Blues / Country Blues / Pre-War Blues / Early American Blues

On this excellent release from the World Music Network's ever-reliable Rough Guide series, a host of unknown early blues artists get their due. While Robert Johnson, Son House, and a handful of other greats from the 1920s and '30s have become widely recognized icons of the pre-war blues era, so many lesser-known, though no less talented, players have slipped through the cracks. Opening with Henry Thomas' spirited "Fishing Blues" (complete with a pan flute solo), The Rough Guide to Unsung Heroes of Country Blues winds its way through a series of wonderful and obscure country-blues gems.

Watching us from space, satellites orbit the Earth at 17,000 miles an hour, capturing images of our world that are breathtaking, and sometimes bizarre. This unique perspective reveals objects and phenomena that defy explanation - massive tsunamis that disappear without trace, a sinister blood-red lake in war-torn Baghdad and a whirlpool in the ocean the size of Connecticut.

"Time Is A Blind Guide" is both the title of this debut album and the name of Thomas Strønen’s Norwegian-British ensemble. In contrast to Strønen’s previous electronic work, TIABG is an all-acoustic group playing what its drummer-leader-composer calls "melodic music with a twist". Its melodies unfurl sinuously over shifting rhythmic patterns, incorporating a number of overlapping musical subgroups. On several songs Strønen is joined by two guest percussionists, who assert strong and solid grooves, allowing Strønen to play freely on top of the rhythms and to interact dynamically with outstanding young English pianist Kit Downes.

The Next Africa, an Axiom Best Business Book Award winner, will change the way people think about the continent. A wave of transformation driven by business, modernization, and a new cadre of remarkably talented Africans is thrusting the continent from the world's margins to the global mainstream.
