New Swedish Cinema

Swedish cinema became recognized for daring representations of sexuality with such films as One Summer of Happiness (1951), The Silence (1963), I Am Curious (Yellow) (1967) and a wave of sex films in the late 1960s and 1970s. The association between Swedish film and sexuality shows up frequently in popular culture. From Taxi Driver (1976) to Mad Men (2007–2015), dirty Swedish movie references abound. Yet the connection has attracted little critical attention.

"Cinema Europe: The Other Hollywood" commemorates the birth of an art that would transform the 20th century. This six-hour series is narrated by critically acclaimed actor/director Kenneth Branagh with music composition by Carl Davis, Philip Appleby and Nic Raine.

The Swedish film revival, also known as the Swedish film renaissance, refers to a period in the late 20th and early 21st centuries when Swedish cinema experienced a significant resurgence in creativity, production quality, and international recognition.

This landmark document of Swedish society during the sexual revolution has been declared both obscene and revolutionary. It tells the story of Lena (Lena Nyman), a searching and rebellious young woman, and her personal quest to understand the social and political conditions in 1960s Sweden, as well as her bold exploration of her own sexual identity. Shattering taboos as it freely traverses the lines between fact and fiction, I Am Curious - Yellow is presented here for the first time with its companion piece I Am Curious - Blue, a parallel film featuring the same characters and in which the lines between documentary and fiction are even further blurred.
