All things being relative, this is Weather Report's straightahead album, where the elaborate production layers of the late-'70s gave way to sparer textures and more unadorned solo improvisation in the jazz tradition, electric instruments and all. The flaw of this album is the shortage of really memorable compositions; it is more of a vehicle for the virtuosic feats of what is considered by some to be the classic WR lineup – Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius, Robert Thomas, Jr. and Peter Erskine. For Erskine, this is is first full studio album and he amply demonstrates his terrific sense of forward drive unique among the other superb drummers in WR annals.

Night Passage is the eleventh album by Weather Report, released in 1980. The tracks were recorded in August 1980 at The Complex studios in Los Angeles (before a crowd of 250 people who can be heard on a couple of tracks), except for "Madagascar", recorded live in Osaka, in June of the same year. The album introduces a new member to the band, percussionist Robert Thomas Jr. Night Passage loses the over-done production layers of some of Weather Report's earlier releases (most notably 1978's Mr. Gone). What is lost in layers of overdubs is made up in solo improvisation in the classic jazz tradition.

Intrada announces the premiere release of the 1957 Universal Pictures western Night Passage. Composer Dimitri Tiomkin was famous for his westerns, including such classics as High Noon, Gunfight at the OK Corral, Red River and Rio Bravo. Until now, very little of his score to Night Passage has been released. Here, Tiomkin displays his legendary talent for scoring the genre, including exciting action passages, broad sweeping themes and two songs written with lyricist Ned Washington: “Follow The River” is a soulful ballad, sweeping and wide, and “You Can’t Get Far Without A Railroad” is a folksy, comic song that a vaudevillian might have called a “novelty number.” Stewart, with his rustic, untrained baritone, performs both in the film (as can be heard in the Extras on this disc).

Altoist Sadao Watanabe is considered one of Japan's top jazzmen. Some of his recordings are quite commercial but this particular one finds him paying tribute to Charlie Parker with what was called "the great jazz trio:" pianist Hank Jones, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams. The seven selections (four Bird compositions and three standards often played by Parker) are all given strong treatment by the quartet. Watanabe's true love is bebop and his solos here are very much in that tradition yet displaying a personality of his own.

Exitmusic, the Brooklyn-based duo of Aleksa Palladino and Devon Church, craft dream pop that is as emotional as it is ethereal. Palladino, who is also an actress and stars as bohemian mob wife Angela Darmody on HBO’s Roaring Twenties drama Boardwalk Empire, began writing songs while in her early teens, just a few years before she started acting professionally.

In the year leading up to the making of “Northwest Passage” Stan had toured extensively through Canada’s western provinces and he had soaked up the stories of the farmers and ex-pat Maritimers working the Alberta oil rigs. Those stories coalesced into many of the songs on this album. However certainly the best known song from the album is the title track Nothwest Passage which has gone on to become a Canadian anthem sung far and wide across the country.

24CD set. Collects every Columbia live and studio album from "Weather Report" (1971) to "Legendary Live Tapes : 1978 - 1981" (2015). This is an incredible set of all of their studio and live albums. The sound is fantastic and love listening to it over and over again. They did a great job putting this set together without taking away from the music. The sound is great.
