"The Works" is the 4th studio album by the English singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Nik Kershaw. It was released in 1989 and was the last album he created for MCA Records. Kershaw chose the album's title as he felt the album represented "the collected works of Nik Kershaw". He did not release any new solo material until "15 Minutes", 10 years later. The album was not commercially successful, though the lead single "One Step Ahead" reached No. #55 in the UK. "Elisabeth's Eyes", the second and final single, failed to chart altogether.

More comprehensive than the U.S. Anthology, the British Best of Nick Kershaw covers Kershaw's career from the beginning. Where it fails however, is in its exclusion of the single versions of some of the hits (including "Wouldn't It Be Good") in favor of 12" remixes.

"Llyria" is the third album from Nik Bärtsch's Ronin and follows on from 'Stoa' and 'Holon', the ECM recordings that established the exciting young Swiss band on the international scene. Leader and pianist Nik Bärtsch's "modular" pieces still define the context of the group's music but the committed input of the individual Ronin members has lifted the work to the next level, blurring the distinctions between composition, improvisation and interpretation.

Having been underrated as both a songwriter and performer, these songs give a nice overview of the various hits he's had and the variety of styles in which Nik kershaw can be recognised. Who doesn't remember megahits like "I Won't Let the Sun Go Down on Me", "Wouldn't It Be Good", and "The Riddle" in their orginal setting? To your surmprise, you may find there's a lot more great Nik Kershaw songs, each of them as original and well produced as all of these near powerpop megasellers. Ronin around the world: a powerful and atmospheric concert recording with music captured in Germany, Austria, Holland, England, and Japan, a double-album which transmits the live impact of Nik Bärtsch’s band and its enveloping modular groove music of interlocking rhythms. It’s also a set that marks the end of an era and the transition into a new one. These are the last recordings of Ronin with Björn Meyer’s elegantly-leaping bass guitar as one of the lead voices, and Bärtsch views the album as partly a tribute to Meyer’s long tenure with the band. New bassist Thomy Jordi, meanwhile, makes an impressive entrance on “Modul 55”, but it’s most often the whole band, as a unified field of force, that commands the listener’s attention.

During the mid-'80s, Nik Kershaw managed to score a handful of pop hits and, in doing so, establish himself as a profitable commercial songwriter. Kershaw began his musical career by learning to play guitar when he was a teenager. In 1974, he joined his first band, Half Pint Hogg, which played nothing but Deep Purple covers. However, his musical ideas were not limited to heavy metal; after he left school, he joined a jazz-funk band called Fusion. Fusion released one album, 'Til I Hear From You, in the late '70s. Once the group broke up, Kershaw signed to MCA Records with the help of Nine Below Zero's manager, Micky Modern. Kershaw released his first solo single, "I Won't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," in 1983; it peaked at number 47 on the U.K. charts. His next single, "Wouldn't It Be Good," hit number five in the U.K. and charted at number 46 in the U.S. Its success led to stardom in Britain for Kershaw; "I Won't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" was re-released in summer of 1984 and charted at number two, leading to a series of hit singles. Collection includes: Human Racing (1984); The Riddle (1984); 15 Minutes (1999); You've Got To Laugh (2006).

Nik Kershaw exploded onto the UK pop scene in 1984 as a solo artist. A string of global hit singles - including 'Wouldn't it Be Good', 'The Riddle' and his biggest hit, 'I Won't Let the Sun Go Down on Me' - helped to propel him to 62 weeks on the UK Singles Chart through 1984 and 1985 - beating every other solo artist, together with performing at Live Aid. After stepping out of the limelight to concentrate on writing and producing, Nik wrote Chesney Hawkes's 'The One and Only' and has collaborated with Elton John (including writing and producing one of the songs on the Duets album), Sia, Gary Barlow and Bonnie Tyler, whilst continuing to release his own well-reviewed studio albums, featuring his distinctive voice and highly personal lyrics. He also regularly plays festivals and performs live to his loyal and fervent fanbase.

Back in 2022, Nik delighted fans everywhere by announcing that the songs that had been gathering dust on his old DAT shelf were worth a revisit. ”Between 1989 and 1998, I took a step back to focus on writing and production for other artists. The result was a shelf full of songs. A few made it out into the World. Most did not. Here are some of those that did not. This is Part 1. I’m thinking of calling the next one Part 2. Do you see where I’m going with this? Nik x “ The wait is now (almost!) over! Songs From The Shelf, Pt. 2 will be available for digital release on all your favourite platforms from Friday 14th April.
