The Sonatas for piano & violin, K. 378, 454 and 526 represent the pinnacle of Mozart’s creativity for keyboard and string ensemble. Their composition is inscribed in the artistic and personal life of Mozart and mark a stage in his development at decisive moments of his life: remarkably, they were not specially commissioned. They were composed in a free style yet the music speaks of the musician’s internal tension at the time when he decided to break free from his links to Salzburg and from the burdensome tutorship of his father to take control of his own creativity. On this release, the Sonatas are performed by violinist Stephane Rougier and pianist Sophie Teboul.

Vienna. 1803: George Bridgetower, a violinist of Afro-European descent, caused a furore with his virtuosity and captivated Beethoven, who was fascinated by his unique and exotic character and wrote a hellishly difficult and magnificent sonata for him. Despite the enormous success of the premiere by Beethoven and Bridgetower, a clumsy remark by the violinist about a friend of the composer led to this famous sonata finally being dedicated to Rodolphe Kreutzer, by whom, however, it was never to be played because of its enormous difficulty.

Eminent composer and revered teacher, Robert Fuchs, was an established part of Vienna’s musical landscape. His six violin sonatas fuse lyricism with conversational ease and chromatic harmonies with folk-derived melodies. This second volume of the complete set (Volume 1 is on 8.574213) charts a decade’s worth of composition, from 1905 to 1915. No. 4 in E major is hymn-like, while No. 5 in A major is playful and deeply lyrical. His final violin sonata No. 6 in G minor, is sombre with a nervous energy reflective of the time of its composition, though still, as always, exuding Brahmsian richness and beauty.

The earlier albums ONYX4170 (Nos.9 ‘Kreutzer’ & 6) and ONYX4177 (Nos.1-3, Variations WoO40) received outstanding reviews. Gramophone said of ONYX4177 ‘ With some discs, you can just tell that everything’s going to go like a dream’.On the new album the popular ‘Spring’ sonata is framed by the strange, beguiling 4th sonata and the good natured 8th. An early Rondo and a set of German Dances complete the generous programme.
