Led by German trombonist Nils Wogram, the creative jazz quartet Root 70 was formed in 2000. All four bandmembers were born (or, as the group's name suggests, rooted) in the '70s – two in Germany and two in New Zealand – and their performing and recording careers have included a number of international collaborations. Beginning with his 1994 debut disc recorded in New York, Wogram has released over 20 albums as a leader or co-leader in a wide variety of settings ranging from post-bop to free improvisation, collaborating with the NDR Bigband and helming such ensembles as his Septet, his Quartet, and his Nostalgia threesome.

A set of duets by trombonist Nils Wogram and pianist Simon Nabatov, The Move features seven compositions by one or the other musician. The playing is pretty free in spots but coherent and thoughtful, exploring sounds, specific ideas, and surprising melodies. One certainly does not expect the ragtime melody of "Itapo" to suddenly emerge seven minutes into the piece. Wogram's tonal distortions throughout the set are both impressive and humorous and he often utilizes multiphonics. Nabatov is right with Wogram, taking a long free improvisation at the beginning of "Herbie and Pierre," acting as a co-equal during the duets and pushing the trombonist. Although the packaging could have been better, the inner sleeve not only lacks liner notes but does not say which musician plays which instrument. The music is continually intriguing, shifting between conventional vamps and much freer interplay.

Touch or impress - that is the question here. And it's the only question that is based on "Things We Like To Hear", the fifth album of Nils Wograms trio Nostalgia. Trombonist Nils Wogram, drummer Dejan Tersi? and organist Arno Krijger make it easy for the listener. With a binding dub melody, they start relaxed into an album whose the lightness they have adopted in the following eight songs. Wogram has shown often enough that he knows how to implement complex ideas, but now he's taking a new path. He lets himself fall into the music, enjoys the moment, feels comfortable with what he is doing, without losing sight of his surroundings.

The second album with the legendary NDR Bigband. the Hamburg radio broadcast orchestra. recorded live to two track analog tape in a similar set up as the Duke Ellington Big Band from the late 50ies. All music composed and arranged by Nils. Somehow old school with some of Nils` contemporary ideas. Some great solos from the band members and guest Jochen Rueckert and Bojan Z.
