The complete - and previously unheard - early work of a later celebrated jazz guitarist recorded in first-class audio quality and produced by SWF-Landesstudio Rheinland-Pfalz in Mainz, as it was then known. It is fascinating to discover the sources from which Volker Kriegel - just 19 years old at the time of the first session - derived inspiration for some of the best known jazz standards: John Lewis' Django, a relaxed Thelonious Monk (Rythm-A-Ning), Autumn Leaves, Norwegian Wood, and other down-tempo numbers of the bop and beat era before discovering his personal laid-back style.
Sometimes it seems like every jazz ensemble with a hint of funk, or a desire to re-create a soulful New Orleans sound, has to be an octet or a nonet at the very least. After all, a full-scale horn section is a must, isn't it? Three Fall buck the trend—the clue is in the name. On Realize! the German trio of saxophonist Lutz Streun, trombonist Til Schneider and drummer Sebastian Winne creates a full, rich and groove-laden sound without recourse to bass, piano or trumpet section. There's plenty of recourse to electronic effects, though, which does much to fatten out the trio's acoustic instrumentation.
During the 1990s, Collegium Musicum 90 and Simon Standage released several volumes of Albinoni concertos, which proved popular with critics and public alike. The concertos were released as discs of single oboe concertos, double oboe concertos, and string concertos. In this re-issue on the Chaconne label, the concertos are presented in opus number order, showing the contrasting colours and tonalities of the concertos as they originally appeared.
