Anima Rara, the debut recital album from Ermonela Jaho, explores music championed by Rosina Storchio, one of the most charismatic lyric sopranos of the verismo era. Jaho sings arias from operas including Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, Leoncavallo’s La bohème, Giordano’s Siberia, Mascagni’s Lodoletta and Verdi’s La traviata, accompanied by the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana led by young Italian conductor Andrea Battistoni. Known for performances of searing intensity and emotional truth, Jaho has been described as ‘the world’s most acclaimed soprano’ (The Economist) and ‘one of the great verismo interpreters’ (The Guardian).

In 1971, Einojuhani Rautavaara was asked to compose a Finnish Orthodox church service, an all-night vigil similar to that of Rachmaninov, comprising Vespers as well as Matins. Soon after the first performance he reshaped the music into what we now know as Vigilia, a concert version forming a musical whole. As his inspiration, Rautavaara has himself described a visit to the Valamo monastery in the middle of Lake Ladoga in 1939: ‘The bells began to ring, low-pitched booms and higher, shrill clinks: the world was filled with sounds and colors…’ The music is marked by dark colors, the heady smell of incense and the crepuscular church lit only by small candles.

An important contribution to the Beethoven Year: Christoph Scheffelt plays all the bagatelles and the famous Bagatelle No. 25 in A minor (WoO 59), commonly known as "Für Elise.” Christoph Scheffelt was born in 1981 in Santiago de Chile. In 2002 he completed his studies as a concert pianist with honors at the Universidad Católica de Chile with Prof. María Iris Radrigán. After four years of study with Prof. Rolf Plagge at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, he is awarded the title Magister Artium in 2006, also with honors. He completes his education, also with highest honors, as a master student of Prof. Homero Francesch at the Zurich University of the Arts. His concert activities, both as a soloist and as a member of the Eldering Ensemble, have taken him regularly through large parts of Western Europe, South America and Australia. Scheffelt is among others Winner of the renowned Rahn Music Prize, the “Claudio Arrau” Prize, as well as the Werner and Berti Alter Prize for Pedagogy.
