Nordic Brass Ensemble was founded in 1993 by a group of brass musicians who shared a strong desire to make chamber music together. The ensemble's basic quartet features legendary veteran bassist Arild Andersen and arranger Jan Gunnar Hoff on piano. The music on Quiet Winter Night is created by film composers Geir Bøhren and Bent Åserud and among the vocalists are some of Norway's top names in popular music: Helene Bøksle, Åsne Valland Nordli, Sondre Bratland, Unni Wilhelmsen, Tomine Harket, Bjørn Johan Muri, Cecilia Vennersten and Bjørn Eidsvåg.

Norway's 2L label has gained a following with releases that are distinctive in two ways: the programs they present tend to be rooted in folk and traditional music to an unusual degree, and they are recorded with well-beyond-the-norm audio fidelity. The Grammy-nominated Himmelrand (the word means "horizon" and is taken from one of the hymns included) may seem esoteric, and it is good to see a 2L product gaining such major recognition.
