"In my music, peace and unrest coexist continuously," writes the award-winning Canadian composer Christopher Tyler Nickel about his setting of the Requiem. Nickel has set the complete Latin text for soprano, choir and chamber orchestra, combining the contemplative language of the lament with complex rhythms and meters. An energetic ensemble under Clyde Mitchell has recorded the work for the first time.

The Pacific Northwest offers up a rich feast of land, sky, and water. It is ripe with influences, abundant with symbols, deep and spirited. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that the Grateful Dead played some of their most inspired shows on these fertile grounds. It does, however, sometimes take a breath for the elements to re-align years later. It seems for us, they finally have and we are able to present not just a glimpse of the band's extraordinary exploratory tour through the region, but a two-tour bounty as the PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS.

In the year leading up to the making of “Northwest Passage” Stan had toured extensively through Canada’s western provinces and he had soaked up the stories of the farmers and ex-pat Maritimers working the Alberta oil rigs. Those stories coalesced into many of the songs on this album. However certainly the best known song from the album is the title track Nothwest Passage which has gone on to become a Canadian anthem sung far and wide across the country.

This live recording was produced in honor of the 20th anniversary of Gospel Christmas with the Northwest Community Gospel Chorus and the Oregon Symphony.

Jazz from The Pacific Northwest combines two previously unissued concert recordings from one of the greatest jazz drummers of all-time, Shelly Manne. The first recording features Monty Budwig on bass, Russ Freeman on piano, Stu Williamson on trumpet, and Herb Geller on flute and alto saxophone recorded at the Monterey Jazz Festival on October 4, 1958. The second recording features Hampton Hawes on piano, Frank Strozier on flute and alto saxophone, Conte Condoli on trumpet and guest vocalist Ruth Price on two tracks recorded at the Penthouse jazz club in Seattle on September 7 and 15, 1966.

During the Grateful Dead’s legendary 30-year run, the band often visited its northern neighbours in Portland, Seattle, and less-than-often Vancouver. Even so, official live recordings from those cities are something of a rarity. Pacific Northwest ’73-’74: Believe It If You Need It highlights some of the best performances from Grateful Dead’s time in the northwest.
