A rare gem on 60s Prestige Records – and one of the earliest records to feature the incredible talents of reedman Sonny Fortune! Sonny burst into fame in the 70s as a spiritual player with a really freewheeling groove – but this late 60s date has Fortune in the company of Hammond player Stan Hunter – a very hip musician with a fluid feel that's really wonderful – and which already unlocks some amazing sounds in Sonny's alto and tenor sax!

Tenor saxophonist Archie Shepp's third release for the Impulse label collects valuable loose ends recorded between March and August 1965. Among the highlights are a passionate reading of Duke Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood" and the title piece, a moving tribute to W.E.B. DuBois, featuring the haunting soprano vocalist Christine Spencer employing a distinct 20th century classical influence, with Shepp on piano. Shepp is the solo horn on these dates, playing at peak form with contributions from vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson early in his career, David Izenzon or Henry Grimes on bass, and four rotating drummers, including Rashied Ali, J.C. Moses, Joe Chambers, and Ed Blackwell, playing a variety of percussion.

Highway 61 Revisited is the sixth studio album by the American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on August 30, 1965, by Columbia Records. Dylan continued the musical approach of his previous album Bringing It All Back Home (1965), using rock musicians as his backing band on every track of the album in a further departure from his primarily acoustic folk sound, except for the closing track, the 11-minute ballad "Desolation Row". Critics have focused on the innovative way Dylan combined driving, blues-based music with the subtlety of poetry to create songs that captured the political and cultural climate of contemporary America.

Critics have focused on the innovative way Dylan combined driving, blues-based music with the subtlety of poetry to create songs that captured the political and cultural climate of contemporary America. Author Michael Gray argued that, in an important sense, the 1960s "started" with this album. Highway 61 Revisited peaked at No. 3 on the US Billboard Top LPs chart and No. 4 on the UK Albums Chart. Positively received on release, the album has since been described as one of Dylan's best works and among the greatest albums of all time, ranking No. 4 on Rolling Stone's "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list in 2003 and repositioned to No. 18 in the 2020 revision.

Wes Montgomery, live at The BBC Studios on March 25th 1965. Although he was terrified of flying, Wes Montgomery finally left the USA to visit Europe in early 1965. By that time he was recording in a smoother style, but in performance he remained as innovative as ever - as this virtuoso set attests. Broadcast on BBC radio during the Jazz 625 programme on 25th March.

Nina Simone was ignited by the civil rights movement, and her fed-up tirade "Mississippi Goddam" ("And I mean every word of it!" she testified before a New York crowd) surfaces on In Concert, an arresting 1964 album that also includes a stunningly theatrical version of Weil-Brecht-Blitzstein's "Pirate Jenny." The second portion of this two-fer presents the folk-jazz-soul diva backed by an orchestra. Not all of it works (less is almost always more where Simone arrangements are concerned, and Hal Mooney's are, often as not, too lush or too clamorous), but her dynamic version of "I Put a Spell on You" and the pensiveness she brings to Jacques Brel's "Ne Me Quitte Pas" display the singer's versatility. With the inspired live set that anchors this collection, that's enough.

My Name Is Barbra, Two… is the second of two studio album tie-ins to Barbra Streisand's debut television special, My Name Is Barbra, which first aired on April 28, 1965. The Medley (Track 11) is the only music from the show, and the other tracks newly recorded for the album. Barbra remembers in Just For The Record: "'Second Hand Rose' became part of a tongue-in-cheek fantasy sequence which was shot at Bergdorf Goodman's…And thanks to people I loved and loved working with—Joe Layton, Dwight Hemion, Peter Matz, Robert Emmett, Tom John, and, of course, Marty—I was able to realize my dream." The album was also certified Platinum and peaked at #2 on the US charts and #6 in the UK charts.
