Dorival Caymmi (Brazilian Portuguese: [doriˈvaw kaˈĩmi]; April 30, 1914 – August 16, 2008) was a Brazilian singer, songwriter, actor, and painter active for more than 70 years beginning in 1933. He contributed to the birth of Brazil's bossa nova movement, and several of his samba pieces, such as "Samba da Minha Terra," "Doralice" and "Saudade da Bahia," have become staples of música popular brasileira. Equally notable are his ballads celebrating the fishermen and women of Bahia, including "Promessa de Pescador," "O Que É Que a Baiana Tem?", and "Milagre." Caymmi composed about 100 songs in his lifetime, and many of his works are now considered to be Brazilian classics. Both Brazilian and non-Brazilian musicians have covered his songs.

This recording of Monteverdi's retelling of the Orpheus legend may not be as fine overall as John Eliot Gardiner's, but it has much to recommend it. Nigel Rogers was the first great modern Monteverdi tenor: he made this record after his prime, but his virtuoso passage-work and stylish ornaments should be required listening for every student of the role. The cast, chorus, and orchestra give solid, if occasionally reserved, performances (though Guillemette Laurens is a shrill Messenger). The best singing of the entire record is (perhaps unfortunately) at the beginning: Emma Kirkby's sweet voice, imaginative embellishment, and eloquent delivery as Music result in absolutely the best rendition of the Prologue on record.

Otto's first creative professional job was as percussionist for the groups Nação Zumbi and Mundo Livre S/A, recording their two first albums with them. In 1989 he departed for France, where he spent two years. Returning to Brazil, he met Chico Science and Fred 04, future proponents of the mangue beat movement. Otto's Samba Pra Burro was praised by the press for its blend of the folk rhythms of Pernambuco with drum'n'bass, rap, and electronica. The album was chosen by the São Paulo Association of Art Critics (APCA) as the best of 1998. Otto has performed internationally since then.
