Born in Israel in 1970 the bassist Avishai Cohen moved to New York in 1992, first making his name on the international jazz scene as a member of the late Chick Corea’s ‘New Trio’ and later of the pianist’s larger Origin group.

Like her father John Cohen of The New Lost City Ramblers, Sonya shared a belief in the transformative qualities of folk songs and traditional ballads. You’ve Been a Friend to Me is the first collection featuring Sonya’s singing, and it reveals the full arc of her musical life through collaborations with her aunt Peggy Seeger, uncle Pete Seeger, Elizabeth Mitchell, Daniel Littleton, and the folk-fusion group Last Forever. While shaped by the roots of her family tree, the radiating and clear sound of Sonya’s voice is distinctly her own.

Chris Cohen was always a quiet kid. In fact, this introversion was one reason he began playing music as a toddler—to communicate without speaking to identify with others without the direct representation of words. It has worked, too, with Cohen’s terrific stint in the mighty Deerhoof and his own captivating art-rock act The Curtains, preceding production and session work for the likes of Weyes Blood, Kurt Vile, Le Ren, and Marina Allen. Somewhere along that long way, Cohen started writing lyrics. He found that, though it didn’t come naturally, the process offered a new sense of self-discovery and reckoning, a way to see himself and the world from unexpected angles.

DNA-Productions will release a soundtrack album for the World War II drama Bardejov. The album features the film’s original score composed by Lionel Cohen (Mob Town, The Engineer, Inside Man, First We Take Brooklyn, Feral State, Blackjack: The Jackie Ryan Story).

Many musicians dream of making a record with a symphony orchestra, but few can afford to make it a reality. Thanks to an extraordinary ability to compose melodies that take root in his listeners’ minds and because he has, for years, patiently performed these compositions on stage to the point where they are practically a part of him, Avishai Cohen was well-positioned to execute such an ambition.
