Fables of the Reconstruction was intentionally murky, and Lifes Rich Pageant was constructed as its polar opposite. Teaming with producer Don Gehman, who previously worked with John Mellencamp, R.E.M. developed their most forceful record to date. Where previous records kept the rhythm section in the background, Pageant emphasizes the beat, and the band turns in its hardest rockers to date, including the anthemic "Begin the Begin" and the punky "Just a Touch." But the cleaner production also benefits the ballads and the mid-tempo janglers, particularly since it helps reveal Michael Stipe's growing political obsessions, especially on the environmental anthems "Fall on Me" and "Cuyahoga." The group hasn't entirely left myths behind – witness the Civil War ballad "Swan Swan H" – but the band sound more contemporary both musically and lyrically than they did on either Fables or Murmur, which helps give the record an extra kick. And even with excellent songs like "I Believe," "Flowers of Guatemala," "These Days," and "What if We Give It Away," it's ironic that the most memorable moment comes from the garage rock obscurity "Superman," which is sung with glee by Mike Mills.

Originally released as a double-album set in 1986, just after the Kinks had their last run at chart success, Come Dancing With the Kinks (The Best of the Kinks 1977-1986) does an excellent job of summarizing their stadium rock and AOR radio favorites on Arista. It leaves no single or radio favorite behind, while adding such terrific obscurities as "Long Distance" (originally only released as a bonus track on the State of Confusion cassette; the early '80s were a completely different world than the late '80s), the non-LP single "Father Christmas," the wonderfully sentimental album track "Better Things" (a close, upbeat cousin to Dylan's "Forever Young"), and the charming "Heart of Gold."

Lonnie's second album for Alligator was even better than his first. From the blazing fretboard work on "Camp Washington Chili" to the sing along rocking goofiness of "Buffalo Women" to the calming stillness of "A Song I Haven't Sung, " this remains one of Mack's finest studio efforts.

An Italian chamber orchestra, Rondó Veneziano set itself apart from many groups of similar style by not only employing mostly women musicians and making it a rule to perform in period Baroque dress, but mainly because they were able to meld traditional chamber music pieces to modern backing tracks, rhythms, and percussion lines, almost giving their classical sound a club music foundation that sometimes bordered on prog rock. Their first big break came in the United Kingdom in 1983, with the single "La Serenissima," which was followed two years later by a successful appearance providing the score to the film Not Quite Jerusalem. Their first album, a self-titled affair, was released in 1980, and was followed by more than 70 albums over the next (nearly) 30 years.

For his second proper solo effort, the former Japan front man delves deeper into the experimental rock, tape loops, and soothing atmospherics he would perfect on Secrets of the Beehive. The first side of this haunting and moody double album features Robert Fripp and some of his former bandmates helping out, while the second is exclusively instrumentals recorded alone. For the uninitiated, Sylvian is a fearless and stylish artist with few peers and one whose wanderlust is as challenging as it is beautiful to behold.

Born on September 16, 1958, Chris Eaton grew up in the West Midlands of England, influenced by music ranging from Deep Purple to Cliff Richard, a diversity that would serve him well during his career as a singer, songwriter, and producer. He was a member of the band Lyrix in the ‘80s, but left, eventually issuing a solo record, "Vision", in 1986. Following its release, Eaton shifted his focus to less prominent, yet intrinsic roles in the music industry. As a songwriter, his songs have been performed and recorded by a myriad of Christian artists, including Susan Ashton and Margaret Becker, as well as numerous notable artists in other genres such as Sheena Easton, Vince Gill, and Boney James.
