Violinist Michael Barenboim makes his second appearance on Linn, this time with pianist and partner Natalia Pegarkova-Barenboim. Together they have recorded some of Mendelssohn’s beloved Songs without Words. Beginning their life as a musical game between Mendelssohn and his older sister Fanny Hensel, these songs were arranged into piano pieces to pass the time during their childhood. The album showcases a selection arranged for violin by violinist and composer Ferdinand David. Hardly known today, David was to become a close friend of Felix and the dedicatee of his famous Violin Concerto Op. 64. These arrangements always remain true to Mendelssohn’s musical aesthetic, and their intimate character calls for a closely shared musicianship, undoubtedly a distinctive quality which the duo has aplenty.

HOUSE WITHOUT ROOF is about the journey of the siblings LIYA, JAN and ALAN who were born in the Kurdish area of the Iraq and grown up in Germany. The three of them want to fulfill their mother's last wish to bury her in her home village beside her husband who got killed in the war under the Saddam Hussein regime. On their nerve-wracking Kurdish-odyssey they are not only faced with their Kurdish extended family that does not accept the last wish of their mother but particularly with their own matters. In recent years they distanced from each other - everybody runs his own life - and whenever they are holding talks, they are mostly based on reproaches. In parallel with the run of their journey it is noticeably that in their home country the dimension of an awful conflict, that nobody can surmise, is heading for disaster.

Nach fast vier Jahren kommt endlich Dagoberts drittes Album: Welt ohne Zeit. Um die Liebe geht es dieses Mal nicht etwa auch, nein, sondern in jedem einzelnen Song. Denn Dagobert hat die vielfach unterschätzte oder auch häufig mit Naivität verwechselte Fähigkeit, den Kosmos zweier Menschen in ein paar wenigen Worten zu beschreiben. Und zwar so, dass es entweder emporhebt oder richtig wehtut. Welt ohne Zeit handelt von zehn Beziehungen, und dieses Mal, das unterscheidet sie von den Songs der ersten beiden Alben, sind es keine Sehnsuchtsgebilde; sie haben alle stattgefunden, Dagobert hat sie erlebt. Manche sind bittersüß: Wir hatten uns/ Wir hatten Zeit/ uns beiden gehört die Vergangenheit. Andere todtraurig: Du hast dich weggelebt/ aus unserer jungen Welt/ und gar nicht erst versucht/ zu machen, dass es hält. Und wieder andere lakonisch: Ich wünsch mir so sehr/ du wärst hinter mir her/ wenn’s nicht klappt, werd ich Kosmonaut… „Lange Jahre war ich ein schwerer Einsiedler“, sagt Dagobert, dessen R's und T's so sanft klingen wie Erlösung. "Nun bin ich endlich in Berlin angekommen. Ich habe viele Menschen kennengelernt, echte Freundschaften geschlossen und konnte mich dem allen hier hingegeben.“

Peter Donohoe CBE is acclaimed as one of the foremost pianists of our time, for his musicianship, stylistic versatility, and commanding technique. On this first volume of Mendelssohn’s Songs without Words, he writes: "When I first became conscious of my desire to be a musician, Mendelssohn meant more to me, personally, than almost any other composer – he certainly ranked alongside Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. My choice of programme for the present recording is based around a large selection from the Lieder ohne Worte, which I preface with the Rondo capriccioso, Op. 14 and the three wonderful Fantaisies ou Caprices.
