2016 collection. The Ace catalogue has traditionally focused on American music. But our compilers have never shied from venturing worldwide in their quest for good sounds, as evident from our popular collections spotlighting the female vocalists of 1960s Japan, France and Italy (not forgetting the UK). Now it's the turn of Sweden. Our smörgåsbord of Swedish she-pop opens with early solo sides by the lead singers of the nation's greatest pop music export, ABBA: Agnetha Fältskog with 'Ge Dej Till Tåls' (a highlight of her second album) and Anni-Frid Lyngstad with 'Så Synd Du Måste Gå' (a song popularised by Françoise Hardy as 'Comment Te Dire Adieu'). Other featured well-known names include national treasure Lill-Babs with her cover of Dusty Springfield's 'Little By Little' and chart star Mona Wessman with a version of 'Music To Watch Girls By'. But it wasn't all cover versions in mid-60s Sweden. Dig, for example, Eleanor Bodel's title track, 'Don't' by cult favourite Doris (who also appears as lead vocalist of the group Plums), au pair duo Bella & Me's groovy 'Help Me Break This Habit' and Britt Bergström's Ivy League-penned 'You Really Have Started Something'. Cherry-picked tracks by the Plommons and cover stars MAK Les Soeurs illustrate the country also produced it's fair share of all-girl groups.

UK collection. This follow-up to our recent Love Hit Me! Decca Beat Girls and Scratch My Back! Pye Beat Girls releases comprises superior 60s she-pop from the EMI group of record labels - Parlophone, Columbia and HMV - headquartered in Marylebone in the heart of London's West End. Most of the female acts signed by EMI were teenagers completely tuned in to the current pop trends. Scottish duo the McKinleys, R&B club habituée Julie Driscoll, talent show winner Billie Davis and Midlands pub singer Beverley Jones took original material from London's Tin Pan Alley and American covers and gave them an abrasive, vigorous kick that made for fabulous 45s. They may not have had quite the Polish of their US counterparts, but the rough 'n' ready sound of the Marylebone Beat Girl was precisely her appeal. Among the many highlights are 'Dancing Yet', a Dobie Gray-style discotheque number by Liza & the Jet Set; 'Like The Big Man Said' by Toni Daly, a cover of Italian star Caterina Caselli's 'L'uomo D'oro' with edgy English lyrics by Peter Callander; and Billie Davis' groovy gender-switched update of Chuck Willis' R&B nugget 'Whatcha' Gonna Do'.

"A Bit of Liverpool" is the 3rd studio album by The Supremes, released in the fall of 1964 on the Motown label. It was produced by Berry Gordy with Hal Davis and Marc Gordon doing the mixing. The Supremes performed The Beatles' "Eight Days a Week" on several television shows including Shindig and Hullabaloo, though the song did not make the album. The album just missed the Top 20 in the U.S., peaking at #21. While not quite as prolific as their pop counterparts at that time, The Beatles, The Supremes enjoyed three albums charting simultaneously in 1964–1965. For its release in the UK, the album was titled "With Love (From Us to You)".
