Louis Armstrong's tenure as second cornetist to the great King Oliver is one of jazz history's legendary apprenticeships, on par with the one Miles Davis served with Charlie Parker or Stephane Grappelli's with Django Reinhardt. Sadly, only a handful of recordings survive from this formative period in Armstrong's career. This LP features 18 of King Oliver's 1923 recordings with Armstrong, as well as a bonus appendix consisting of seven tracks recorded in 1924 by the Red Onion Jazz Babies under Armstrong's sole leadership (and featuring, on one number, a very young Alberta Hunter). The performances are as red-hot as you'd expect, and include two King Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton duets.

An Selbstbewusstsein hat es Oliver Tree noch nie gemangelt. Und so verwundert es nicht, dass er das Ankündigungsvideo zu seiner neuen Single "Cowboys Don’t Cry" betitelt mit "How I made the biggest hit of 2022". Und was soll man sagen: er hat die Argumente auf seiner Seite. Allein sein jüngster Track "Life Goes On" hat über 575 Millionen Streams und 160 Millionen Video-Views auf dem Konto, dazu kommen bei TikTok 25 Millionen Kreationen zu dem Song und 30 Millionen Video-Views. Und jetzt? Will Oliver Tree nur noch Country machen, wie er in dem Clip unten gegenüber dem durchgedrehten Producer sagt (den er natürlich auch selbst spielt). Was natürlich Quatsch ist, doch wer weiß das schon so genau?

Propaganda is Oliver Huntemann's fifth studio album, and sees him expand his sound and range over the course of 12 tracks, without losing his signature style. "Taktik" and "Poltergeist" see the German producer flirt with slower tempos, but the bass is so menacing on the latter track that its intensity is unstoppable. The pace picks up on the insane filtered builds and rolling snares of "Egoist", while recent single "Rotlicht" is classic Huntemann, all spiralling foghorns, insistent percussion and the darkest sub-bass this side of late-90s tech-step. Propaganda does contain some real surprises - like the down tempo sound scapes of "Anonym" - and the eerie electro of "Momentum", but its unifying theme are bass lines that are uniquely malevolent and multi-layered.
