The long-anticipated premiere of Wolfgang Rihm's Requiem-Strophen (Requiem Verses) in March of 2017 was also a special debut: Mariss Jansons, principal conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted his orchestra for the first time at the musica viva concert series. Iberia is a musical journey through time across the Iberian peninsula. From the medieval Spain of Alfonso the Wise to that of the Renaissance with Guerrero and Victoria, we are led to the Portugal of Lôbo and Cardoso, masters of the golden age of Portuguese polyphony. The voyage ends with two contemporary creations that continue this tradition, by the Portuguese António Chagas Rosa and the Spaniard Iván Solano.

In 1575 / 77 Venice was hit by an unusually violent plague epidemic that killed a third of the population. In order to avert the plague, construction of the Chiesa del Redentore began as early as 1575.

Coupling powerful interpretations with path-breaking scholarship, Contrapunctus presents music by the best known composers as well as unfamiliar masterpieces. The group’s repertoire is drawn from England, the Low Countries, Spain, Portugal and Germany, particularly in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The scholarly facet of the group’s work – including the discovery of long-lost music and reconstructions of original performing contexts – allows audiences to experience the first performances of many works in modern times.

The winner of numerous prestigious prizes, including several Gramophone Awards, the vocal ensemble Vox Luminis, founded by Lionel Meunier in 2004, is now regarded as a benchmark in the interpretation of the great works of German Baroque music.

Music for Holy Week. François Couperin's 'Leçons de Ténèbres' (c. 1713-17), a setting of the Lamentations of Jeremiah, fused devotional expression with a dramatic performing style embodied here by sopranos Lucy Crowe and Elizabeth Watts. Two Trio Sonatas and a 'Stabat Mater' by Sébastien de Brossard round out this luminous programme.
