Rather than coasting on the vapor trail left by Dawn in Space, Pyramidal re-ignite the boosters, taking their blend of space and psych rock further out - for them and us - by pumping in some flares of prog into the tanks. Frozen Galaxies is still alive with trace elements of rock’s core, but the mixture has been recalibrated. No slouchers before by any means, Pyramidal sound reinvigorated after Dawn. The songs are fiercer, more intense and their playing is pushed deeper. That doesn’t mean it’s jackhammers-on-the-asteroid time. Obvious fans of pioneers such as Hawkwind and more experimental leaning Sabbath, Pyramidal get that heft isn’t about indulgence in distortion or useless bombast. That’s just turning a knob or two. The songs themselves, the structure, is what has the weight.
Yagya's Rigning album from 2009 is the Icelandic producer's most acclaimed dub, techno and minimal masterpiece. Rigning is essentially one long track split into movements. It depicts a city sleeping as gentle rain falls and dubbed out grooves zone you out. Yagya's style is always patient and slow burning, his grooves are long and drawn out and his pads reach up into the heavens. This whole album in coated in a warm fuzz and is a real comfort on dark, long, cold nights. As insular and melancholic as it is, there is also plenty of beauty in the melodies and delicate keys. From dark and gloomy to more optimistic and meditative, there is a sophistication throughout this always cinematic album that continues to make it stand out nearly a decade after it was first released.
Israel in Babylon is a pasticcio compiled by Edward Toms in 1764, with pre-existing instrumental works by Handel transformed into arias. The performance is fantastic, with thrilling choral work from the Kantorei Saarlouis, expert solo singing Julia Gooding, Jonathan Peter Kenney and Joseph Cornwell, and spirited playing from the Ensemble UnaVolta under Joachim Fontaine.
Tzadik is proud to present this historic meeting of four major figures in the new music pantheon, each a master improviser and groundbreaking instrumentalist in their own right. Their work together is symbiotic, telepathic—the music powerful and sensitive, sustaining a hypnotic mood with great attention to detail and subtle nuance. Mixed to perfection by Bill Laswell, this is a landmark recording of electro-acoustic improvisation featuring four pioneers of the genre. Mindblowing!
